Not a bad film at all.
Part of the Jarvis trilogy, probably the strongest set of movies in the series simply for no other reason than giving Jason a Nancy or Laurie in his films and giving us another character to give focus to for once. A New Beginning is definitely more about Tommy and his troubles more than it is about a paramedic using the Jason legacy as a cover. Which is a great transitional entry into Jason Lives and the conclusion of the Jarvis Trilogy. A New Blood and New York are also fun because they give us other characters to like or dislike, like Tina and Doctor Crews from New Blood and Jason Takes A Boat has a plethora of fun moments. Oh and almost forgot...A New Blood gives us the definitive Jason look, with great attention to detail.
But I've always felt the Paramount entries are all watchable (1-8, even the remake with Paramount brought back into the fold).
Once you get to New Line, its all pretty bad with JGTH being only watchable due to the brutality Jason shows whether he is on camera or using other people to do his dirty work. Other than that, Sean Cunningham didn't like Jason, so he gave the film to 'fans' who shit all over the Paramount films for no other reason than to do something different at the expense of calling themselves 'fans'.
Even then, I've felt the New Line films are all pretty bad. If I ever marathon them, I make sure to skip out on Jason X, it literally has zero replay value whatsoever.
Freddy vs Jason I don't really count in the New Line Garbage, but it also wasn't that great either because they made shit up in order to justify Jason being the lesser of two evils. Being afraid of water was enough for me to see they really hadn't watched a single film in the Paramount entries, which was part of New Line's problem, they more or less ignore the canon and did whatever silly shit they wanted with the legacy.

This entire series is something that has to be appreciated to even enjoy. Even so I don't really hear many people saying they plan on watching these flicks because they enjoy them so much. Outside of Jason being an iconic horror character there really is no relevancy in this series other than some pop-culture mojo.
The tranquility of night hides many malevolent things taking place under a stunning, mysterious sky pocked with precious gems of light. -GP

I'd argue the F13 series is more relevant than the Halloween series by todays standards, even with the first Halloween being better than any of the Fridays. Jason is just the bigger name, the hockey mask, the machete, that shitty jacket they always give him now thanks to Freddy vs Jason, the zombie Jason itself, etc, the fact that Jason always used a variety of weapons despite the traditional machete, etc. The entirety of the Halloween series is saved by Pleasance for me, that and Halloween 3. Resurrection, the Rob films nearly ruin the entire thing and I find Halloween 4 to be pretty pedestrian. Halloween 6 is a fun film in both versions, but its basically stupid even though Myers is arguably at his most brutal in 6.
Even then, I'd put the Nightmare series on a much higher plethora than the other two and this is coming from a F13 fanboy of sorts. Nightmare just had the better storytelling, better direction, better effects, better production value, different strong female leads, hell better acting than either of the other two series, arguably a more sinister, charismatic villain as well as Freddy was a child killer on top of everything else. It also helped that Robert Englund was the man and he pulled it off 8 times. While the Nightmare reboot was 'grittier'. It was slow, boring, nothing new and Freddy was boring.

They setup Tommy to be the killer at the end of 4 and instead of having 5 be the big payoff they wimped out and used the paramedic. So you can blame the makers of this movie for not following through on the killer Tommy, not the makers of 6.
As for the different actor in 6, this was because the the dude from 5 became a born again christian. and didn't want to be involved in horror movies. He was replaced with Thom Mathews, veterin horror actor best known for the first 2 Return of the Living Deads.
Actually the 7th film was supposed to be Freddy Vs Jason, but due to a rights issue and no workable script they moved to their back-up Jason Vs Carrie, but unable to get the rights to Carrie they went with generic psychic girl. And I actually liked the whole idea of a halfway house for disturbed teens. A bit more relatable and realistic than undead Jason versus some chick with telekinetic powers.
Yes It's very inconsistent in tone. See my examples previously of going from the overall arching "disturbed Tommy" plot to goofy/annoying jaunts around town. The changes in tone are jarring and draw the viewer out of the movie.Inconsistent in tone? I give them credit for trying to take the series in a new direction.
6 is boring to me. Don't like the Tommy character in that one. Lame kills. Stupid ending. It's so bad I've only watched it once.
I've watched all of them many many times. I suggest checking them out again. You may find things you like and dislike that you didn't notice before.
I completely agree.
It was definitely Jesus.

Part 5 is decent, kung fu badass tommy was funny. The naked chicks were really hot, the kills were ok, but the fake jason was putrid. I think it's better than Part 8, 9, and 10/X and the remake. Freddy vs Jason is better than all of the ones I mentioned. While JGTH was by far the worst to me by miles, Jason screaming in the beginning of the film was ass and it wasn't even close to being as good as The Hidden was.
