Rick Baker retiring from FX work

At 64yrs old Horror Fx Legend Rick Baker has announced his retirement. His stated reason for it. The rise of CGI. He said companys want fast and easy, instead of doing things the right way. The CGI has replaced most of the animatronic work he does as well as some of the prosthetic work too.
Talk about a damn shame. Cheers for all the stuff Nightmares are made of,that you brought to life.

First of all, the CG stuff definitely took away the animatronics part of what I do. It’s also starting to take away the makeup part. The time is right, I am 64 years old, and the business is crazy right now. I like to do things right, and they wanted cheap and fast. That is not what I want to do, so I just decided it is basically time to get out. I would consider designing and consulting on something, but I don’t think I will have a huge working studio anymore.
Holy shit...this IS a terribly damn shame...Rick Baker is one of my biggest inspirations for makeup artwork for filmmaking and what not, he's a fantastic artist and him leaving is a major loss for H-wood and for audiences who are being turned away from creatives like himself.

    Purely a damn fucking shame...

This is another nail in the coffin for old Hollywood. However, there will be new Rick Bakers in the future, working their hardest to create great special effects on computers. Cinema has been constantly changing since its creation but the medium has never lost greatness.

CGI is great when it's great but rarely is it ever pulled off flawlessly. You can tell when there's more organic characters or monsters in front of the camera and you can tell when they're made with computers. CGI is a good tool, but again it ceases to be a creative and unique tool if it's over exploited and the only thing being showcased leaving no traditional mediums that can still prove themselves just as great. I'm sure new Hollywood will still be around for a good long while, even if all we're going to get is half-baked movies and not a lot of indies.

It looks like great things are on the horizon for Netflix, indies and underground artists to shine as the decade keeps turning, I can't wait to see more movies like the Babadook and or Guillermo del Toro come around!

H-wood is being a total douche, I'm all for progression, but at the same time change is not always a good thing, if anything having less variety in everything creates a terrible and unhealthy market for any industry there is. So if H-wood in the next decade or two goes down into a financial collapse, that will be their fault entirely for not taking better responsibility and better care of the creative side of filmmaking as opposed to being obsessed with product placement that just shows how sad and how broken up they are to keep the damn lights on.

It's sad but like cmurder said things change. Some movies work better with practical some work better with CGI. It all depends on the story that needs to be told. I just hope filmmakers get better at deciding which is which. Tired of seeing imunessary CGI.

I dont mind Cgi if its mixed with practical fx. Used to enhance the prosthetics. The movie Laid to Rest has two of the Best knife Murders ive seen on film. They were a mix of both. And it was Fucking Brutal. But One Bad CG scene can kill a whole movie for me. I definitely dont think CG will kill the art of Practical FX. Just needs to be used smarter in lower budget films.

CGI is still in its early days. There's going to be bad and good, just like throughout the history of practical effects. It can only get better with the increase of computer capabilities. One of CGI's advantages is that it doesn't always have to be used for exploding head shots or collapsing buildings. Look at what David Fincher did for Gone Girl and Zodiac using CGI. That shit is damn near invisible. CGI is the inevitable future, but I don't think practical effects will die out.

Practical FX, practical sets, practical locations, practical props and live actors are all going to be replaced by CGI one day.

I will forever be amazed by his work in An American Werewolf in London. The practical effects for a movie released in 1981 were superb. The beginning werewolf intro in the countryside was a pulse pounding moment, loved how the werewolf appeared in the movie, and (Griffin Dunne) Jack's make-up was amazing.

Fuck it, just find real monsters or really kill people. My bet is there will still be those that complain it looks fake.
