Yep. Last season of JJ and the last season of Marvel on Netflix. I'm actually hesitant to watch it because once I do, there's nothing else to look forward to featuring these characters again. Honestly, I'm not at all put out that they canceled Luke Cage, Iron Fist or Punisher. Their shows ranged from average at best to frustratingly mediocre at worst. But it was inconceivable that they canceled Daredevil (IMO, the best TV show Marvel has ever done) and while Jessica Jones wasn't fully up to DD's snuff, it was still worlds better than the other three. If they'd kept only this show and Daredevil, I would have been perfectly fine with that.

At any rate, I'll of course binge the new season...though I might have to mourn preemptively before doing so.

So I binged the entire season over Saturday and Sunday, and am feeling mixed about it. Ritter is excellent as usual (she really inhabits this character completely) and her directorial debut, episode 2, is a stand-out. Now, as we all know, Netflix canceled all their Marvel shows, and JJ's cancellation was announced after its production had already began. Thing is, though, that in TV, scripts are locked before the first frame is shot. So the writers, upon learning they were being canceled, had to scramble and do a lot of rewriting to give Jessica a legitimate ending. Unfortunately they didn't appear to have time to do the same for the supporting characters, and many of them end the season at low points. Of course their stories were meant to be continued in the following season, but having had the rug pulled out from under them, they're instead left to uncertain (though certainly miserable) fates.

You can definitely feel shifts in tone and momentum throughout, as the writers had to readjust certain sub-plots to accommodate at least giving Jessica's arc a clear ending. The main villain starts off interesting but quickly loses his mystique (it feels as though a number of scenes delving deeper into the character may have been snipped due to the aforementioned cancellation readjusting) and at many times, he's little more than an afterthought.

Despite the scatter-shot feel of the season, though, it does have its moments, some of them among the best in the series -- just not near enough of them. But while the story isn't up to snuff, Ritter absolutely deserves an Emmy nom for this season, though she won't get one (the TV academy still has a stick up its ass when it comes to comic-based shows). Which is a real shame, because her work in this final season is, for my money, the best of her entire career. It's just a shame the season itself couldn't measure up to her. 5/10

This season became a chore to get through. I was with it through most of it, but Jessica's constant reluctance to just take care of the villain is still prevalent here, which is incredibly frustracting to watch. It's just the same thing over again in each season--some villain she can't kill or put away for whatever reason, because she's constantly being outsmarted or some other silly reason. By episode 9 I grew tired of all the reptitiveness and started fast-forwarding through a lot of stuff. I'm glad this show is over with because I don't think I could've stood another pointless season of Jessica avoiding what needs to be done.
