I can dig on both of your points on this series. Definitely some horrific elements being played out here in these flicks so I can see how for some it falls in that horror catagory, and don't have any problem with that. Personally i'd thrown 'em up on the action/thriller shelf - especially Anarchy. Mac's EFNY comparison with it is solid about what's being laid out here. The Warriors also comes to mind as well.

The 1st I liked, the 2nd I didnt feel the Anarchy, I'll be checking Election Year as that subject suits the Purge title so well.

I dig the first two so look forwards to this. Have to state that yeah the second was better than the first so hopefully the series repeats this. A prequel would be awesome as well, wouldn't be surprised if they do do this at some point.

I never said it was a bad movie. My point is that this is NOT a horror flick.

I tend to agree with Wikipedia's def of The Purge films:

The Purge is an American social science fiction action horror film.

First film was definitely horror since it's essentially just a home invasion film, while the sequel is pretty much just action, in my opinion.

Not a bad flick. Had its pros and cons, like the last sequel, but I feel they're both entertaining, though I'd give a slight edge to part 2 since I just found it generally more interesting. Though this one did offer more interesting aspects of the purge itself that we didn't know much of, like the fact that there are people that drive around picking up bodies for the city and other people that help offer aid. Interesting stuff. Biggest complaint was everything involving those annoying schoolgirls. The lead girl is a terrible actress and tried entirely too hard so she came off as cartoony. They were on screen longer than they should've been. Next to that the rest wasn't too bad. Will have a more detailed review soon.

There are movies that offer up social or political commentary in a responsible and subtle way.
There are movies that offer these same things up, are more direct but do it in a very creative way.
These two categories give us some of the most important literature and best movies we can think.

And then theres movies like the purge election year, which seems to want to do one of the above but of instead of realizing they need a scalpel for this job, they bring a bazooka. They shove the political and social commentary down your throat and even worse, the way they relate this to the viewer is as basic as possible. President Donald Tolbert who implemented this and his opposition, some woman fighting for the people.... gee, i wonder who these two people are supposed to represent, even more so, i wonder who the writers and director will be voting for in this election.
I kind of love the idea of them diving into this society a bit more, but man they used some of the worst writing and directing tactics they could.

Just watched this... I liked it, but it felt very anti-climactic. Felt the ending needed something more. Maybe they set up for a 4th installment or something. 6.5/10 for me

As I predicted when this came out, this will do more for the Halloween mask hype than for the movie itself.
The masks from this flick are all over the fucking place now and are more relevant than anything about the movie.

Found it to be a little above average overall. I liked it ok, but that's pretty much my take on the whole series so far. As much as I love the premise behind these Purge flicks, I still kind of feel let down by them at the same time. I feel like there's way too much wasted potential overall. Still though... I find them to be interesting, enjoyable dystopoian action, and i'm always down for some of that.

Meanwhile back at the bat cave... A few takeaways from this flick.

It was cool to see a couple Justified cast members kicking it together again.

Perpetual smile lady in the leading actress role.

Those Candy Bar Girls were Billy Mumy cornfield material if ever there was a more deserving lot.
It's examples like this last one that only furthers to solidify my lack of faith in humanity.
