The rumored SOA spinoff focusing on the Myans is officially in development at FX. Kurt Sutter returns to produce and will help write the new series with Elgin James (Little Birds). The new series is quoted to be a "dark, visceral family drama that takes a new look at the most American of icons, the 1% outlaw, this time reflected through a Latino lens."
Sutter went on to say: "I wanted to find a strong, unique Latino voice. Because I didn’t think a white guy from Jersey should be writing about Latin culture and traditions. Elgin is that voice."

For a while there were rumors that they may do a prequel series that depicts younger versions of lead characters we saw from the show, but it looks like they're just going for this spinoff angle. I'd be happy with either, but going with the Mayans gives us more unique storylines and opportunities as opposed to a prequel which would have just shown us things we might've already heard about from the show. Plus it would've been kind of tough to get the casting down to match these characters we're already familiar with.
It also makes sense that Sutter is going back to the SOA universe considering his last series The Bastard Executioner did poorly, so naturally going back to an established brand with a big fanbase makes more sense.
