Prom night is one great 80s slasher film

It isn't as gory as other slashers from the early 80s boom but it has great pacing and suspense. It's a slow burn with some real build up. It is nice seeing leslie neilson do a serious role instead of the more serious ones he would be known for later on.

I never really liked the first one. There's nothing that hasnt been done better by other movies. Now the sequels...those are hilarious and imaginative.

I found the first movie kinda slow and boring at times. It was decent overall

I don't know that I'd call the first one great, but it definitely had a hand in establishing certain tropes of the sub-genre. Personally I didn't love it, but I do enjoy it for what it is. Jamie Lee's good in it (even if by that point she had matured to the point where she was no longer believable as a high schooler, at least visibly) and the supporting cast does a decent enough job making their characters likable. I totally agree about Nielsen, and always thought he was a fine dramatic actor before he eventually segued into his true love, comedy.

And I liked the reveal and the emotion between Jamie Lee and the killer (staying vague on the off-chance there are any newborns here who have never seen it). So while I may not think it's a great slasher, I do think it's a solid one. Definitely could have used some juicier kills, though. Co-star Jeff Wincott would go on to (bigger?) fame in the '90s as a b-movie martial arts star, though IMO he's not near as good an actor as his brother Michael Wincott (Strange Days, The Crow).

I am working my way through 80s slasher films that aren't connected to major franchises like friday the 13th or halloween or a nightmare on elm street. Prom Night was the start. Tonight I may watch the uncut version of mynbloody valentine, but I hope to watch a few I haven't seen before I have been eyeing Final Exam and he knows you're alone.

If you're looking into non-franchise slashers you've got your work cut out for you. There are TONS of 'em. The Initiation, The Burning, Slaughter High, Iced, The Prowler, Graduation Day, Edge of the Axe, Madman, The Funhouse, Rocktober Blood, The Mutilator, Pieces, Curtains, Intruder...I could go on and on. For every wide release slasher like Friday the 13th or Elm Street there are literally a dozen low-rent/obscure ones.
