Was Frankenstein really a bad guy?

I suppose this conundrum may require a little bit of movie nerd history, but can anyone confirm wether Frankenstein was an antagonist/bad character or anti-antagonist/good character? Or just misunderstood? In the Monster Squad (1987) he was portrayed as the good guy teaming up with the kids. I have never seen any other movie featuring Frankenstein.

Are you referring to the Monster or Dr. Frankenstein? Because those are two completely different characters. If you are talking about the Monster, I wouldn't consider him a "bad guy" at all. Just misunderstood

Yeah I think the show Penny Dreadful portrayed the monster well--very misunderstood and lonely

The two incarnations I tend to go by are the 1931 film and the stage play in both the monster is misunderstood. He meant well but doesn't fully get cause and effect just yet. Like when he throws the girl into the water because he didn't get people where different than flowers. Dr. Frankenstein seemed like his heart was in the right place but was perverted by a sense of joy at "playing god".

For a long time in my youth I was terrified of the "monster". My youngest memory was when I was in kindergarten it was Halloween and I wouldn't enter the school unescorted because the masks were everywhere. So yes he is the worst of the worst for making me go through all of that

But as I grew older I learned that the creature was more of a protagonist and everyone else were the antagonsists in the story, as we feel sorry for the abuses and isolation the creature is made to suffer through for being different from the others.

Well to be fair he was the brand new monster on the block when you were a kid

You can't blame the monster for his own exsistence or nature, he was a (wrongfully) created being that inevitably wanted to kill his creator - when reconciliation was impossible. It's a love story really - read the original by Mary Shelly.

Frankenstein the doctor was certainly a monster. He meddled with things he didnt understand or respect and created a monstrosity and instead of owning up to it he hid and blubbered like a baby instead of manning up and taking care of it.

The monster is yes...also a monster. While he started out innocent (despite killing a child) once he learned what he was and who gave him life, he sought selfish endeavors like forcing Frankenstein to make him a bride even if it meant the death of Frankenstein's love or the death of his young nephew (I think it was his nephew...it's been quite a while since I read the book). After all the killing and chaos the monster fled leaving Frankenstein to hunt him down across the globe to right the wrong the young doctor once made.

Keep in mind I'm mostly referring to the book, but some of the same themes can be found in the 1931 classic and its sequels.
