Does anyone else feel the same way? Sort of feel like cheating.

I wrote a similar thread on another forum. Not sure where I should post this. But my question basically came down to this entire situation: I live at home with my parents and a sibling. While I watch horror movies all by myself at night when everybody is asleep, I still feel like I am cheating because I don't watch horror movies while home alone. I never get the chance, because nobody in this house ever spends the night elsewhere, so I'm never home alone aside from moments during the day. I watched Ring (1998) and Noroi: The Curse (2005) last night, and I was thinking to myself.... "Goddamn, I would've been scared shitless if I watched this movie for the first time while being home alone." But given the circumstances: 1) I've already seen it, so I know what's to come, therefore Sadako crawling out of the TV is not unexpected, and it's the unexpectedness of that scene that really added to the horror and 2) I'm never home alone. So in a way, I feel like I am cheating myself by not optimalizing the situation I'm in, in order to actually get scared. And by the method I currently have, it will never happen anyway, because rewatching some of the scariest horror movies takes away its effect upon a second viewing. Does anyone else feel this way, or am I alone in this? I'd love to hear your thoughts. Should I get it out of my head? Does it not matter? Does it matter? I sorta want to pause watching any horror movie so that years from now, when I have a place of my own, I can finally watch a horror movie and actually get really scared if the movie knows how to scare the hell out of me, like Asian horror movies do... But I don't like the idea of waiting that long. Thanks for putting up with my crazy mind, it's appreciated. And your input will be valued, too!

It all depends on the person, but lights out with a nice set of headphones should do the trick fine if you want to feel alone without actually being it. I used to that that a lot growing up, especially when everyone was asleep. It didn't really matter to me whether I was actually alone or not since I felt like I was anyway. Now if I'm trying to watch something and someone keeps interrupting me, then that's a bit of a problem

What Fright said sounds like your best bet.

I had a similar situation growing up but since everyone in the house hated horror I had to sneak it which may have added to it. Just remember that the horror genre is vast and often oversaturated. You'll probably never run out of horror movies to watch for the first time.

Adding headphones to any horror movie intensifies it 100%! I need to do this. When I lived in Baltimore we had a basement. I would go down there lights all out and put on a ghost flick. That usually works! Paranormal flicks are the only ones that get me. My mind will fuck with me!

In your situation headphones are the way to go. I use them on occasion if I watch something really late.
But I have a really badass theater system and absolutely nothing comes close to watching, listening to music or getting some gaming in with it cranked up.

I watch movies whenever I can, because if I waited until I had a night time viewing with no one around, then that would happen once every few weeks.

That being said, I do enjoy watching movies with my GF as long as it's not a serious horror movie or a foreign one, she seems to disconnect when you have to be really invested in a film to "get it" the only example counter to that I can think of is The VVitch, which she really got into.

Like Mac, I also have a sick surround system along with a 150" projection screen so there's nothing better than a dark night curled up on the couch with a cat and maybe a dog, an nice glass of beer, the volume cranked up, and sick horror movie on.

Yeah it's one thing to watch a horror flick...or any movie with headphones and feel like you are "alone" and more involved. But to have a surround system totally fuck you over with all the physical channels and to FEEL the base through your shoes...completely different and more exhilarating experience.

Oh yeah, there's nothing better than hearing a rustling behind you knowing a killer is stalking the characters on screen. Even my 5.1 headphones don't hold a candle to the real deal. (especially because most videos you download don't have 5.1 or any surround built in to save space)

My movie room has blackout curtains and a projector so day watching isn't a problem. Most horror movies arent scary anyway so mood setting is only necessary for certain films like the VVitch.

Late at night...during a thunderstorm....when NO ONE ELSE IS AROUND for me is the best time to watch a horror movie...with or without headphones.
