If anything is possible, is it
    possible for something to be
    impossible?

Another 365 Days of Horror attempt

I initially wanted to watch a horror film every day for a year. I failed after a few months due to life hitting me like a brick. Strtfighter decided to give it a whirl and actually made it through, which is fucking awesome. His topic is Here and actually has a Google Doc compiling all the films he watched into a list. I decided on a different approach and looked to IMDB for my film list needs. Darkgod actually uses this site and his profile is here. It's a nice looking site, but seemed a little too complicated when I just want to add a film and go. Maybe I haven't used it enough though.

I'm not sure how many films I can throw on here, but I find that it's a good way to track films. I have the IMDB app so I can look up a film, rate it and quickly add it to my list within seconds. Plus, I have a bad habit of IMDBing movies while I'm watching them, so I am already on there anyway. To keep track of my progress through this, my IMDB list is in my signature. I am also going to post the films here. I'm not going to spam the topic, just update it and maybe give reviews or recommendations to the films I really enjoy.

Typically, I am going to watch films I haven't seen before. This will be moot when Halloween comes and I gather people to do a film marathon for UHM's Halloween Horror Movie Marathon, because I'm going to watch all my favorites during October, but generally I really want to broaden my horizon when it comes to the lesser known and underground flicks. I see that PrimetimeLoser is really watching a lot of different things for her podcast (Which is here and is fucking awesome!). It's cool to have a reason to sit through those really bad movies I wouldn't normally want to watch, but doing it for the greater good of the 365 days of horror.

Now, I know I won't be able to watch a film every day, but as long as I hit 365+ before next August 13th, I'll be happy.

I dig the IMDB listing and will likely use that during October's marathon since I'm like you and am usually browsing the movie I'm watching on IMDB anyway

Usually I watch at least one horror film every day, and by all rights I should probably have seen every single one of them at least once. But I know there's a ton of them out there I haven't seen. Lately though I haven't really been watching much of anything ...just throw something in the dvd player and walk away or fall asleep to. October isn't all that far away, and I try to participate in the horror movie contest on DVDTalk, so I try to follow their categories...so far I fall by the wayside and do my own thing. My goal for this year is to just follow what needs to be watched for the contest with watching possibly 2 or 3 that I have never seen daily...see how that goes.

Like, so many people out there were trying to track this down. And it just...got delivered on a tweet. What the hell.

Thanks everyone. It will definitely be tough with school and work, but hopefully I can power through.

So summing up what I watched so far..

The ones I would highly recommend if you haven't seen them are, "Madman", "Pieces", "Witchboard", "Grim Prairie Tales", and "Body Bags". I felt that Pieces is one of the best slashers I have seen. I always heard Strtfighter recommending it, but never had a chance to check it out. Now, I will definitely be buying this masterpiece. Another one I enjoyed was Grim Prairie Tales. I thought the chemistry between Dourif and Jones was fantastic and having an anthology based around the wild west days was super fresh and original. Witchboard was a ton of fun and kept me interested all the way through. Some scenes surprised the hell out of me and was well executed. Body Bags was just a boat load of fun. From the physical effects, to the acting, to the awesome cameos, it's a super fun anthology. Madman was great because it took an already established slasher genre and turned it into a unique killing spree.

The ones I thought were just OK, "Terrorvision", Popcorn, Witchboard 2, House of Clocks, Midnight Hour, and The Mutilator. I thought Terrorvision was a little TOO 80s for my liking. While the effects were neat and the acting was pure 80s cheese, I thought that the movie slowed down a lot after the parents were killed. The dialogue was a little too cheese for my taste, but was still a fun watch. Popcorn was good and had good effects. I thought it was a lot of fun because you could tell the actors had a blast with it. It had a decent story, but some plotholes here and there stuck out to me too much. I did really enjoy the characters and effects though. Witchboard 2 is almost an exact copy of the first, but done pretty poorly. The acting is a lackluster compared to the first and was just generally goofy in terms of plot holes. There were many times that I could tell what was going to happen and they did, but just really poorly. Midnight Hour was a neat little tv film and was enjoying it until that horribly dated dance sequence. That completely took me out of the film and really showed it's made-for-tv colors. Otherwise the acting was good and had some fun with it. The Mutilator had awesome kills but the choice of music and obnoxious characters kind of ruined it for me. I'm on the fence with this one because the kills were done very well, but that acting is super laughable. There is a scene where this one character shakes in front of the camera while he's getting killed and it goes on for a little TOO long and it's just more funny than anything. In House of Clocks, I have seen way better Fulci. I didn't care for the mindless animal killing and thought everyone in the film was a bad guy. I felt like I was trying to be forced to be rooting for the bad guys and I could not do it. That ending is hilarious though.

Shit films I watched were, Scalps, Witchboard 3, The House that Would Not Die, and The Black Room. Scalps was really bad, but in a fun way. It's a really bad film with bad acting, effects and story, but god damn it, it was fun to watch. Sounds odd, but if you watch it, you'll know what I mean. Witchboard 3 was boring as hell and only named Witchboard 3 to ride the success off the other two. This has nothing to do with the first two and goes nowhere. The House that Would Not Die dates horribly. It was extremely boring to sit through and was a made-for-tv possession film so it was tame as well. Characters were terrible. The Black Room has the only upside of starring Natasha Henstridge. Other than that, it's laughably bad. The acting and CGI is fucking terrible and for some reason Lin Shaye is in it. Overall stupid.

I'll make my week-two week mini reviews in more detail oriented ways. I was fiddling with the idea of grabbing my microphone and posting my reviews to Youtube as it would be easily to link and I could go more in depth speaking than I am at typing.

So, still going strong with this. Took a few days off because I went down to Florida with some friends. I was thinking of loading some movies onto my phone and going to town at night, but I didn't get in until 2am-3am those nights because alcohol.

Some of my favorites so far, since my last little update, are..

Body Bags, Devil's Candy, Deadly Spawn, Rawhead Rex, Salem's Lot, Trilogy of Terrors, Project Metalbeast, Alien, Life, Cold Prey, Necronomicon

Body Bags was a really fun anthology that had great practical effects. Add in John Carpenter in the wraparound story and a lot of different cameos and I think you could safely secure this in a top Carpenter films list.

Devil's Candy was one of my most surprising watches. I am a big metal head and I usually find it cringe worthy when metal heads are put on film. Filmmakers always exaggerate their attitudes and put in the metal horns every chance they get. It instantly makes me think that no actual metal heads were on set. This, however, had maybe one cringe worthy scene. Other than that, the movie was fantastic and didn't throw bands down your throat. It had a lot of good tension, effects and the cast was great. I couldn't recommend this enough.

Deadly Spawn is so damn cheesy. I love this film so much and own it on blu. I could watch this time and time again and has one of my favorite endings. Terrible, but in a good way.

Rawhead Rex is another film I was surprised about. I was going in expecting this super cheesy film, but came out impressed by the effects and acting. Really solid flick and will be buying this immediately.

Salem's Lot I needed to revisit. I watched the uncut version and I feel like it's damn near perfect. It is Tobe Hooper's best film and gives people actual scares almost 40 years later. Plus it's a tv movie! Not once was I bored by this three hour film.

Trilogy of Terror movies were a lot of fun. Karen Black dominated the first film and has her best performance in the third section. The sequel that came out 20 years later still held onto what made the first special. It had updated effects and was still a fun watch.

Project: Metalbeast has werewolves mixed with steel skin. I mean, come on. It's awesome

Alien is one of the few movies I'd give a perfect 10/10 to. Excellent all around and I never get sick of it.

Life was pretty awesome. I was going in thinking it will be a lousy CGI alien, but I wasn't distracted. You could obviously tell that it was CGI, but it wasn't too shitty looking. The cast was pretty good and I really enjoyed the ending.

Cold Prey was some podcast prep as I'm talking about it soon. A familiar slasher premise that hits it on all cylinders. Great film and sequel.

Necronomicon was a really fun anthology. Jeffrey Combs plays HP Lovecraft and it has some good effects.

I have to say, as a whole, Halloween may be my most disliked franchise. It took too many turns and overall just a silly bunch of films with no explanations between each one. Most franchises don't go off the rails so much. Pink Panther trilogy seemed redundant to watch since they technically didn't happen in the lore. Danielle Harris was the best part about four and five. It's a shame considering Halloween 1 and 2 were masterfully made. Three was definitely enjoyable, but not as much as the first two. It just goes down hill after that, and quick. Four and Five had great acting from Harris and Six had Paul Rudd and a fucking LOUSY script. I love some Paul Rudd, but even he couldn't save it from that atrocious editing. I don't even care to see the Producer's cut. Halloween H20 was better than I expected, but even then, nothing happened for the first hour. It was nice seeing JLC again, but knowing that four, five and six were omitted from the series, it seems like a big chunk was lost. It's a shame considering I loved the Jaimie character so much. I don't even want to talk about Resurrection. Seemed just a fucking terrible cash grab. The 2007 remake was too raunchy and I'm checking out Halloween 2 now, but don't expect much. Overall, just a bad franchise in my opinion. It had some good ideas, but MEH besides the first three entries. I have seen all these films before, besides Halloween 2 (2009) and Resurrection, but it was nice to revisit to solidify my opinions.

The Amityville films were awesome in my opinion. The first eight films were all enjoyable to an extent. Even the "bad" films still had good ideas and gore. I really liked the fact that every film was only a sequel to the original one. At first it was driving me nuts because they kept changing up the continuity, but after someone from the FB group explained that each sequel was different, I opened my mind up way more. Amityville: It's About Time was so much fun to watch. The remake was crappier than I remember it, but when I first saw it I wasn't much into horror as I am into now. Glad I rewatched it. I thought it was way too over the top though. The original film was a little too long and the remake's pacing was better, but this one had cheesy lines and over the top acting and scenarios. The 2010 Amityville films were fucking atrocious. Complete opposite of the 70's, 80's and 90's entries. I didn't even finish all of them. They were just mediocre films with zero talent behind them. Glad I watched this franchise though. I never seen any of the films passed the first one.

Not sure which franchise I want to tackle next. I heard the Saws are coming to Netflix, so I may do those. I love the first one and the second isn't too bad either, but all the ones after I just watched once. Sure, it's torture porn, but I love the effects and over the top plots to them. Even linking a few together like they are going on around the same time is so god damn stupid, but give credit for them thinking about some sort of plot in these films. The creativity of some of those kills was great.

So, this was a big month for me. I decided to do some franchises I wasn't too familiar with. I'll give a little writeup of each after I did the Halloween films..

Wrong Turn films were better than I expected. I think Wrong Turn 2 was the best out of the series hands down. Henry Rollins and the practical effects really turned that film into a gem for me. I absolutely loved it. The prequel Wrong Turn, I think it was 4, was pretty decent as well. A lot of these offered some sweet effects, but the story got worse and worse as it went on. The final entry of the series with Last Resort was completely awful. I think I gave it a 2 in my rankings. Otherwise, they were decent mindless films. The second entry is still the best in my opinion. First one is really good, but is a bit dated for me.

For my 100th film, I had to watch Dude Bro Party Massacre III. I have been meaning to watch that for years and I knew it was going to be good. Holy shit did I have a great time with that. Usually movies that are made bad on purpose nowadays are a complete waste, but these guys did their homework. Everything from the VHS feel, to the high body count to even the practical effects were did amazingly. Fantastic movie to have as my 100th film in this. I can't recommend it enough.

I really dug the Omen films. I have seen the first one a few times, but never the sequels. I don't think they needed to be two hours each, but were very good watches. The story made sense to make it a trilogy. The ending to the third is a bit disappointing, but you get Sam Neil running around as the antichrist. I mean, come on.

I watched all the Saw films, but not the newest. I thoroughly enjoyed them as I loved the continuity. I think the Final Chapter was a waste though. They brought in too many characters and by that time I was sick of the, "oh wait, there was an additional person there too!" flashbacks. Overall, it was a good series with great looking effects.

I ended my 31 days of horror with the Frankenstein films. The original Frankenstein is one of my all time favorite films. I pretty much enjoyed all the sequels. They did get a little too crowded near the end of the Universal films, but still a lot of fun.

Overall, it has been a pretty good marathon. I'm on day 77 or something, with 128 films under my belt. Doing pretty well. Now, onto Christmas/Thanksgiving horror, until January 1st.

Said this in the Facebook group, but I had to stop with the Christmas films relatively quickly. A lot of those films are fantastic (and one of my all time favorite films is a christmas horror film), but a majority are pure trash. Plus, it's a lot easier doing this long ass marathon by not sticking to holiday appropriate films for over a month lol.

Still going strong though! Going to try and watch 500 movies by my year end.

Welp, I hit 365 days. I went into a lengthy thing on Facebook about it, but I feel accomplished. I'm still going to try and fit in one horror flick per day until August 13th though. I'm going to call these bonus films if anything.
