"The Shape of Water" a genre-bending horror/fantasy film from Guillermo Del Toro

An other-worldly fairy tale, set against the backdrop of Cold War era America circa 1962. In the hidden high-security government laboratory where she works, lonely Elisa (Sally Hawkins) is trapped in a life of isolation. Elisa's life is changed forever when she and co-worker Zelda (Octavia Spencer) discover a secret classified experiment. When agent Richard Strickland (Michael Shannon) brings in a mysterious creature (Doug Jones) — a part man, part fish captured in South America — Elisa feels an unexpected connection.

I honestly couldn't believe that no one posted a thread on the forums here or even FrighT hasn't made a page for this great-looking fantasy/horror film coming from the master himself, Guillermo Del Toro, this December 8th! It really looks good and exciting as well as alluring to its rather dark themes of a forbidden romance, I'm SO there! Crimson Peak was alright for Del Toro standards, even if it wasn't all THAT good. This looks like a step up from that, and this helps to have a good Bioshock vibe to it.

I can't wait! Why hasn't anyone noticed this?

Looks awesome to me. I love horror-romance and this looks wicked. The retro 50's vibe is cool too.
Goes to the top of my "want to see" list. I rarely go to the theater, but I will for this one.

I actually saw this a month or so ago and could have swore I posted about it here

This is an incredible film! I loved every second of it. Definitely do not pass it up...it's possibly Del Toro's best work...yes it is THAT good!

Totally different kind of movie but yes, as far as quality goes all around...it may not be BETTER by much but at the very least on par.

I loved this movie, it gets a 10/10 from me, it's simple in story, but complex in characters, the visuals compliment the story in creative ways that most movies rarely ever do, and it has a woman making sweet love to a fishman so it's oscar worthy just like Pan's Labyrinth, The Devil's Backbone, Pacific Rim, Mimic, Cronos and maybe even Crimson Peak.

I hope they'll let Guillermo make this Mountains of Madness movie finally after the positive reception...but it's H-wood so maybe this will be Guillermo's last feature film to get any greenlight from major studios that are slowly dying in the mainstream.

In the minority here, but IMO this movie is overrated. It had some good scenes, and a couple of characters that really shined in their roles, but as a whole the movie is circumstantially nonsensical. I’m ok with the premise completely, but to sell me on that premise you have to pave the way for that with at least a comparative measure of plausibility. This flick doesn't seem to be able to do that in too many situations. I expect something like that from a b flick or indie production, but not from something of this caliber.

The whole water filling the bathroom scene... the entire lack of any sort of security protocols and competence from a black op site where cleaning personnel have free reign of the facility. Just way too much of that kind of nonsense from start to finish for my taste to be able to really enjoy what it had to offer... which is a shame. Pans L is a much much better flick than this.

Agreed, I like the movie, but it does seem a bit overrated, especially to win best picture at the time But then again I don't remember who it was up against.

As many of you, I don't know what to think about this movie too. It's very well made, maybe too correct. It's horror, but not. It breaks taboos around sexuality, but according to the political correctness that's in vogue. It's a yes but no.
