Should I buy the Blu-ray or the DVD?

Although it's not a deep question, it's certainly a growing practical dilemma for most of us. And I think the question could still generate some good discussion.

So why wouldn't I buy Blu-ray? Because I'm cheap, and I wouldn't be able to play it on any player (I don't even own a Blu-ray player yet myself, I have to use my roommate's). And honestly, I'm not always convinced about the higher Blu-ray quality.

Maybe you guys could reminisce or something about which Blu-rays were or were not better than their mudblood DVD counterparts.

BTW, the movie of issue is Holy Motors. I need that shit on my shelf.10.0.0.0.1 192.168.1.254

So for one reason is longevity, it's been shown dvds have a limited shelf life and blurays have a much longer one. So if you are a physical media collector, stuff that lasts longer is better. As for the differences in picture quality a lot has to due with the work put into making the transfer of the film. I've seen a lot of half assed transfers that are still the same dvd quality dumped onto a blu-ray disc, others are a vast improvement.

Personally I always go blu over the dvd if it's available.

Also, companies tend to pack the blurays with more and newer features than the DVD versions, so if you're someone who likes extras that's another incentive to go blu.

Seconding what everyone else has said. The only time I get DVD over Blu is if it is a really low budget film that is older. Like one of the Blu Ray restorations of Evil Dead made Ash's car look brand new, even though there were jokes that depended on his car being old and shitty. Not saying these movies can't ever be up converted and still look good I'm just picky about who does that work. I'll take a lower quality medium if HD makes the movie look really shitty or like a soap opera. I hear ya on being cheap but for preservation and longevity reasons Blu is the way to go.

You should buy the blu. Cause it has bonus features. And I'm going to sit back this weekend and kick it to the bonus features. I didn't know it was out yet. It's not, but I know people.
