Re-visiting Con Air (1997) and The Rock (1996)

Back in the mid-to-late 90's we had a slew of cheesy blockbuster action flicks that were just plain fun (despite how silly the story would be), from end of the world-type stuff like Independence Day and Armageddon to some non-stop action gems like Con Air and The Rock. This was also the time when movie-goers were starting to pay more attention to the team up of Jerry Bruckheimer and Michael Bay. Despite how shitty Bay is now, the dude made some legit entertaining flicks back in the 90's.

Anyway, I was feeling nostalgic recently and decided to re-visit Con Air and The Rock with my oldest to see if they're just as fun as I remembered back when I was saw'em in the theaters as a young teen. I decided on the two films because I always thought they were both similar in tone and action and both had Nic Cage back when he was still an action star and we weren't entirely aware of his crazy ways and plug-on hair.

Having seen both again, not only are they still as fun, but maybe even more-so now that I'm older and can appreciate and spot more of the details and noticeable actors that appeared in both films. The actors thing is especially true in Con Air, where aside from the obvious main cast I completely forgot Dave Chappelle and Danny Trejo were in it. And how badass Buscemi was The story is ridiculous and some of the cast (mostly cage) overacts, but I'll be damned if the movie ain't just a whole lotta fun.

Then we've got The Rock a far superior film in terms of action and story, but still just as cheesy at times. Being a Michael Bay and Jerry Bruckheimer production we've got the staple car chases and explosions we've come to expect from the duo. Despite the cheese, Sean Connery steals every scene he's in, even if he's just delivering some silly dialogue.

Both solid 7 ratings from me. If you've never seen either film then and go watch'em now! Otherwise, I'm sure most of us here have seen both flicks. What are your thoughts on these cheesy 90s gems?

They have played the living shit out of both of these on Cinemax starting back in September and they are still on almost religiously every week at some point. Both movies are the kind where if I'm flipping through channels and they are on I watch them. Gotta love those cheesy, 90's extremely loud guitar riffs in Con-Air...especially when Cage says "What you think I'm gonna do, I'm gonna save the fuckin' day."

I still get a kick out of the mistake in Con-Air where the dude's car fall from off the plane. It shows a shot of Cusak and the other two guys as its falling and Cusak has on sunglasses. It cuts away and he has no sunglasses. Then after it falls it shows the same exact shot of the three of them and the sunglasses are magically back on

I believe to this day filming the finale on the Vegas strip is the only time they ever shut it down.

They're not "good" movies but these are the only '90s Bay films I can stomach. So over-the-top. So utterly unbelievable that only a scene with unicorns shitting rainbows would be less realistic, but still mostly fun.

There was a thread around here somewhere discussing Tony Todd and his acting skills. The Rock is another example of how this guy can't even feign having a cold. His scenes are God awful. Funny! But God awful.

What has Con Air got do with Michael Bay? Is it because Jerry Bruckenheimer produced this and also some Bay flicks?

Anyway, not interested in The Rock because I hate Michael Bay.

Con Air has Buscemi and Malkovich.

I'm a big fan of 90s thrillers and action films too. Speed, Demolition Man, Judge Dredd, Under Siege, Point Break, Total Recall, Nikita, Leon, Robocop 2, Predator 2, Heat, Starship Troopers, Independence Day, The Fifth Element, Cliffhanger, Goldeneye, Twister, The Crow, Backdraft, In the Line of Fire, Blown Away, Sudden Death...

    The list goes on.

Yeah, he's even worse in The Rock than Nicholas Cage's mullet in Con Air, lol. Neither he or his hillbilly co-conspirator would have made any general's short list for a coup much less risen to any sort of rank. Having those two acting in the same scene with Ed Harris and David Morse was either someone taking a piss or the result of some manic-depressive casting director. They had no business on that set. That said, minus their scenes, it's got some good times.

Oh shit, you're right. I always just assumed it was Bay. It was one of the near indistinguishable wannabes, Simon West.

I have always loved Con Air. I quote the hell out of it and has that super 90's feel. Over the top acting mixed with an exaggerated group of various characters. Just so awesome. One of the handful of Cage movies I can actually watch and enjoy. Cyrus the Virus
