Stanley Kubrick's The Shining is to cartoonish to be scary

I just find it to be a terrible film. It looks great, but Jack Nicholson and Shelly Duvall don't fit the characters. Jack Nicholson becomes way to be over the top and he just gets goofy instead of menacing. The book is scary and intense this film is just dull and silly

I like the flick, but it's a bit lengthy for its own good. Never really liked Shelley Duvall either

This is a movie that was scary for its time. Which is most older horror movies. Look at ANOES, people at one point got scared by those movies (until they got more comedic). Same with halloween and F13th, etc.

Sadly i'd like to say that horror movies ended up becoming scarier because directors and writers began perfecting the art of writing suspense. But sadly its become jump scares and cgi.

The Shining is a classic, awesome flick. Maybe the greatest horror film of all time. It improved on the novel in every single way.

I agree. The novel was alright, but a rare exception here where Kubrick's genius outshines the book.

I'm not one to pour praise on Kubric, I've been very critical of him. However, The Shining is a great movie with an amazing performance by Jack Nicholson. The movie is beautiful and unnerving at times which is what I want when I go looking for a horror movie.

Everybody should see the 2 hour cut which is the best version of the film. Also, as to it being 'cartoonish', Kubrick inserted references to cartoons in the movie like Bugs Bunny and Road Runner. It's a meta horror film in some ways.

The incredible atmosphere and setting really put a stamp on the movie. I always found it to be a beautiful picture to watch.

Beautifully filmed, yes. But I find it not scary, boring, wanting Shelly Duvall to get killed, wanting Danny to get killed, and watch the rest of the movie to see if Kubrik explains why he went with a bear costume instead of dog costume for the homosexuality sub-plot that was in the book.

Agreed completely. I think it's the closest thing to a perfect horror film. The performances mixed with Kubrick's directing are flawless.

Yeah I've read up on that theory. Possible violence or sexual abuse is implied. Unless you want to go with the supernatural version.

Yep, a lot of crazy theories about hidden messages in The Shining, just watch the documentary Room 237.

I have been meaning to check it out, but it has a pretty low star rating on Netflix. I may still watch it though.

I was pretty underwhelmed when I saw the movie for the first time a couple of months ago. I loved the cinematography, that's what stood out to me the most. It's definitely not scary, but not every horror movie has to be scary to be loved. I felt Burnt Offerings was a much better haunted house movie, but sadly it never got big. I feel like The Shining overshadowed it, despite the fact that The Shining was released 4 years later. I had set expectations for this movie because everyone claimed how scary it was.

Burnt Offerings is good and obviously influenced The Shining to some degree. Wouldn't say it's better, though. My favourite 70s haunted house movie is The Amityville Horror.

EDIT: Just googled 70s haunted house movies and Let's Scare Jessica to Death and The Sentinel are also pretty good (from what I've seen). House is insane lol love that movie.

Funny that you mention The Amityville Horror.. I saw it for the first time ever two days ago. I enjoyed it a lot. I plan on watching the sequels as well. The actor who plays the father (I forgot his name, my memory is kind of fucked) looks like Christian Bale but with a beard. If there is ever another remake of the movie, they should cast him.

Speaking of remakes... I saw the Amityville Horror from 2005 a couple of years back and I really liked it. It literally made me immune to jump scares. But when a period passes in which I don't watch horror movies, I tend to get jumpier when jump scares are included.

I'll make sure to watch all the other movies you mentioned as well! I have got this somewhat big list of which horror movies I want to see. I also keep track of the horror movies I have watched on livejournal.

Cool. I've watched a few of them. I really like Amityville II: The Possession, It's About Time and Dollhouse. Some of the others I also had fun with.
