Do We Need A Zombie Break?

    https://www.yahoo.com/news/zombie-break-232132131.html

Ugh, zombies. There are too many zombies these days. Zombie jokes, zombie spoofs, zombie video games, people on drugs who everyone accuses of being zombies. It's all too much. Sure The Walking Dead has been pretty good for the last season, and that Warm Bodies movie was kinda cute, but otherwise it's too much. We should be done with the zombies!
    ....................................................... ....................................................... ....................................................... .....

I'm a huge fan of the sub-genre and even I say "that's enough." PRide & Prejudice zombie did it for me

    Thoughts?

PRide & Prejudice & zombies could have been rather brilliant had it kept to a short story that didnt rely on mocking itself too much.

That being said, you should have been saying "that's enough" when a tv show about a detective zombie who solves cases by eating victims brains so she has visions of their murder, was released.

Trends typically die off when the main culprits of the trend lose their appeal. That being said, the walking dead is now one of those culprits and the original series, as horrifically written as it is, shows no signs of dying anytime soon. In fact we've kind of gone the opposite way. At a time when it should be dying, you can now instead pretty much slap "the walking dead" on something and its an instant hit. Dare i say that as a franchise its starting to rival Alien, Indy, etc.?
But in today's culture as long as this is successful, the sub-genera will be balls to the wall.

Its funny because RE and 28 days revitalized the zombie craze. And then it was about to die, but then the comic book "culture" took over, which gave rise to TWD, which boosted the craze more then it had been... ever before really.

I like how the article was posted 3 years ago and the sub-genre is still going strong

But yeah, zombies have become rather tiresome, but I still enjoy them if they're done right. Walking Dead is still entertaining and I'll give a movie a chance if it looks like they're trying to attempt something slightly different.

I would like to see more 'supernatural zombie' movies made. I am tired of people being turned into zombies by viruses and other scientific explanations. Something like the original voodoo zombies of the 1930s-1960s or the Italian zombie movies of the 70s/80s.

    Heh.
I actually started writing a script that featured an alternate dimension antagonist who was in control of a zombie army that went from world to world, devouring it.

That's why Brian Keen's zombie books The Rising and City of the Dead (sequel) were so great and unique. The zombies were re-animated corpses possessed by beings from another dimension with very big Lovecraftian overtones.

I believe that is why my short story Out was received so well, got published and won 3 contests. It was written from a lone zombie perspective. I have even had some indie film makers come to me wanting to make a film of it.

Hollywood is just too scared to take chances like that, especially for horror, so I notice a lot of indie pics and shorts tend to play with the mythos. Unfortunately most of them end up terrible.

I'm hoping del toro will eventually convince a studio to back his Mountains of Madness project. If that does well then I'm sure we'll see more projects like it

Been saying this for years now. Too many people using zombies as a way to get people to watch their tv show, movie, or music video.
