The Most Terrifying Film You Ever Experienced

Most of us have already seen The Evil Dead reboot and I believe for the most part can say it is not the most terrifying movie experience at all. Probably pretty far from it. Gore/blood does not = TERRIFYING.

But, for you what is the scariest movie? It doesn't even necessarily have to be horror, truth be told as we grow older things that go bump in the night just are not what they used to be.

As a kid I grew up watching horror with my father religiously. I remember not being able to watch the vampire in the window scene in Salem's Lot. At no other time in my life have I ever had to turn away from the screen.

Now though horror movies don't phase me at all. Some disturb me a bit, especially ones that deal with children being harmed in any way. Contagion scares the living shit out of me to be honest. An outbreak like that portrayed the way it was chilled me to the bone. Thinking of that happening (because it actually CAN) the first thing I think about is my family and...I just shudder.

I'll give a shout to Jaws for giving myself and others an irrational fear of water, so much so as to be afraid of closing my eyes in my own swimming pool for fear of shark attack =p

I also found Event Horizon to be pretty scary and unsettling as an older viewer.

Movies that "scare" me now are realistic movies like The Strangers, Vacancy, and Frozen. When these things could actually happen.

I guess I'll have to think back to when I was a child when things still freaked me out like that. For me it was IT.. Fucking clowns, they still creep me out to this day.

I have said this many times before..Exorcist

I don't care what anyone says. The movie was made in 1973 and still scares the absolute shit out of people, 40 years later. That is a true horror film in my opinion and probably one of the scariest movies of all time. My mother can't even look at Linda Blair's face with the makeup applied. She almost begins to cry every time.

I'd also throw Nosferatu up there. I watched it for the first time a few months ago and holy shit was he terrifying to look at. The grittiness of the film matched with the overall tense scenes/amazing directing also makes for a truly horrifying film.

EDIT: As for me? I'd go with Wicked and say the realistic types creep me out, but none of them really scare me.

Maybe the scene in The Orphanage when she's knocking on the wall to play with the spirits. That got me a little spooked. Along with watching VHS and webcam segment got me pretty good. But that's about it.

Exactly the same for me. That's why Contagion got to me. Just imagine a superbug that comes out of nowhere and has a high mortality rate, hell there are some now and a thread here thanks to Roadmaster

There's still something to the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre that gets me. Probably because I was very young (7ish) when I first saw it. Even today though, the way it looks on a TV screen it just has that eerie feeling.

You are on to something with how "it looks". Movies that have that extra Hollywood polish to them don't give off that certain vibe it takes to creep me out. It is hard to explain but I believe most will understand what I am trying to say.

Without a doubt The Excorcist but Night of the Living Dead '68 hit me hard too. I saw it for the first time as a kid on TV, very late and by myself. I was paralyzed by the time it ended. A true horror thrill ride. The Excorcist did that too me as well. JAWS, TCM and even The Birds scared me too (was a kid at the time)

When I was younger, there were only two movies I ever turned off because I got too scared. Original NOTLD and Alone in the Dark (about the blackout and psycho slashers). Had to rewatch them both when I got older.

The last horror that left me with a creepy feeling after it was over... The Strangers.

I remember the Exorcist really terrified me when I saw it - though I was only 11 at the time. I'm sure I'd handle it better now. What I think was equally terrifying - maybe even more - was Last House on the Left (1972). It was way ahead of its time in its ability to shock and terrify.

I was talking about this with my roommate, we agreed we couldn't think of genuinely scary movies. The Exorcist was the "scariest" we could come up with. Lots of movies have a "gross-out" factor, or a creepiness factor (Dead End was always one of my favs that falls into this category).

I mean when we were little lots of stuff scared us like Large Marge in Pee-Wee's big adventure or the very idea of a zombie movie. Now it's likely because we've been de-sensitized to the "scares" through years of constant barrage of horror and just growing up.

As time passes it is increasingly difficult for me to find a movie that achieves this objective and as I walk the labyrinths of my memory, it is also difficult to find stranded a movie that was absolutely terrifying.

The very first run-in with a scary movie I had was when I was about seven years old, and I somehow ended up watching PuppetMaster. Scared the living shit out of me. I remember not being able to sleep properly for three days and made a pillow fort on my parents' bed every night for a week. I believe this movie is the reason why, to this day, I'm terrified of dolls and clowns.

So, yes, IT I've seen part of, and I'll never sit down and watch the whole thing.

When it comes to movies that truly get to me, that make me uncomfortable and will makes me triple check the locks at night, I'd have to say Funny Games.
