    Black Sabbath (1963)

Like Strtfghtr said this is a horror anthology film featuring three spooky stories. In existence there is an Italian version and a US version of the film. Boris Karloff makes different introductions/conclusions on each of the films, but he gets more screen time on the US version making a speech between each short. I'd recommend the US version solely for Karloff's amusing talks with us.

The first story is The Telephone where a woman is harassed by a former lover, spying on her in her apartment and calling her phone repeatedly, totally freaking her out and threatening her. The Italian version has a big twist in the story which I won't go into, but the US version completely removes this twist making the story somewhat thin in comparison. The lead actress is stunning, Bava has great taste in women that's for sure. It's a good little short with an intense atmosphere and mystery about it. I enjoy it.

Second is Wurdalak, starring Boris Karloff which is a vampire story set in the 1800's. A family awaits their father to return from his journey, when he returns he's a little strange. This is one of my favourites, Karloff is fantastic in this, and scary to watch as he murders and torments his own family. The whole film is spooky, especially the isolated location enveloped in an eery mist.

And the final film is called The Drop Of Water. In this film a woman dies of unknown causes in an apartment building, when a nurse is called to prepare the body she notices a ring on the dead womans finger, a ring with strange powers, drawing in anyone who sees it. The nurse steals the ring of course and is immediately haunted by the dead woman wishing to reclaim her treasured belonging. The corpse in this is freaky as hell, with a strange distorted grin and staring eyes which I found very effective. I found this one to be the funnest of the three.

So overall a very solid film and is an anthology film up there with the best, like the Creepshow films. This is one of Bava's best as well.

    Kill Baby, Kill! (1966)

Dr. Eswai is called to a small isolated town in the middle of nowhere (circa late 1800's) by an Inspector called Kruger to perform an autopsy on a recently deceased girl, much to the dislike of the villagers, a deeply religious and superstitious bunch. When the Inspector turns up missing, the doctor does some investigating of his own with the help of the village witch, only to find out the town has been haunted by the ghost of a young girl controlled by the bitter intentions of her elderly mother. Bava has always been great at period movies, and this one is no different. He really captures the feeling and look of those old times. This is a great ghost story with genuinely scary moments and some spectacular scenes which I've now seen mimicked many times over the years, truly a great director who has influenced many.

Watched it the other night and like i thought, loved it just as much as when i saw it back in the 80's. I love the way , at the time, he was doing something different and had his own unique style. Very atmospheric and spooky. People sometimes are put off by black and white films or 60's classics because of the era. Id advise them to give Mario's films a shot as he was so good at what he did best ....... Make terrific movies that still hold up today just like they did half a century ago. Good write up too K.I.N.G

Five Dolls For An August Moon (1970)

A group of business people and their girlfriends are invited to an island by Industrialist George Stark for a weekend of relaxation. One of the guests is Professor Farrell, a fantastic Chemist who has come up with a formula which will make someone a very rich man. Over the weekend the business men proposition him in a bid for the formula. When the professor refuses them he turns up dead. Then one by one the guests start dying, creating friction between the remaining guests as to who the murderer is. This film is just confusing and the dialogue is ridiculous, you can't help but laugh at it. Guest reactions to the murders just seem fake and they seem some what unfazed by the carnage. Their actions are ridiculous, like hanging the bodies in the freezer, which I found quite amusing with clown music playing as the corpses swing steadily back and forth. The murders are mostly off screen and there is basically no blood to be seen and the ending leaves you with a what the fuck feeling. It's just a mess of a film which Bava doesn't even like. Give this one a miss.

Yeah, some are hit and miss but with these write ups which i agree with, horror fans have more of an insight into a great film maker who influenced so many.

Kill Baby Kill had some amazing set pieces, the one shot of a graveyard at dusk and all you see is a little girl swinging on a wooden swing in the foreground is amazing. Also the spiral staircase shot towards the end was so hypnotic. I can truely appreciate Bava's style in that movie

    Baron Blood (1972)

Peter Kleist is a young and enthusiastic man researching his heritage, which leads him to Austria and the castle of his ancestor, a sadistic Baron who was cursed to a violent death by a witch he had burned at the stake. During his visit, he and his escort Eva Arnold played by Elke Sommer explore the castle and read aloud a satanic incantation which raises the Baron from his eternal sleep to further carry out his murderous fantasies. All actors put on a wonderful performance, especially Joseph Cotton who plays the vicious Baron. It has some very intense chase scenes and the murders are so violent and bloody. This is my favourite Bava movie so far, it's just awesome.

Hatchet For The Honey Moon (1970)

John Harrington played by Stephen Forsyth is an extremely wealthy designer in the world of fashion, living in his mansion with his wife Helen with whom he despises. She is a spiteful woman, who refuses to leave him, and claims she will be with him forever whether he likes it or not even though he constantly has affairs with other women. Bringing them back to his studio he dresses them up in a bridal gown, that's when his inner demons take over and he murders them with a meat cleaver in a bloody and grisly manor. One night, he becomes fed up with his wife and murders her like the rest, only she comes back to haunt him, to be with him forever by his side, driving him to the brink of insanity. I really like this one, and so does woodenheart I do believe. It's one of his better films, with such a great script that keeps you watching. The title is misleading though as the murderer uses a meat cleaver and not a hatchet, I don't understand but hatchet sounds cooler I guess. I think this is a movie that would appeal to a wider audience.

We watched The House Of Exorcism which is a bastardized version of Lisa and the Devil to cash in on the Exorcist craze at the time. Just added gore scenes and the story altered a lot, it was all the producers idea.

I truly have to admit that K.I.N.G's reviews are amazing! Sadly, Bava's not considered as a primal director here in Italy, as his kind of macabre is not considered as it should be. But fortunately, I finally found someone who really appreciates some of his productions!
