Throughout the years, there have been many classic movies and they’ve treated us to not just iconic moments, but also to a stream of merchandise on the back of their success. Whether it’s a simple set of vampire fangs or a Freddie Kruger glove for a Halloween party to collectable Alien figures and horror movie T-shirts, there’s plenty to please fans of the genre. One such area has been the gaming industry, which has seen a variety of films find their way into adaptations for PCs and video games consoles. Here are five games based on some of the most recognizable horror movies of all time.
Bram Stoker’s Dracula
Francis Ford Coppola’s gothic 1992 masterpiece won a plethora of awards in the movie industry, including Academy Awards for Best Costume Design, Best Makeup and Best Effects (Sound Editing), and received many nominations. This was hardly surprising, given the caliber of the cast: Gary Oldman, Winona Ryder, Keanu Reeves, Sir Anthony Hopkins and Richard E. Grant were all in excellent form and the film was later adapted from the silver screen into games for Nintendo and Sega.
The game is side-scrolling and you, the player, play the eloquent Jonathan Harker. The different levels of the game take place in locations based on ones from movie, such as inns, graveyards and, of course, the castle of the evil Count Dracula, and you have to find weapons to beat the “boss” at the end of each level. Some reviewers online have loved the game, whereas others haven’t been able to stand it.
Nightmare on Elm Street
The slot industry is highly competitive and operators offer a wide choice of themed slots, plus lots of slot bonuses and other promotions, to attract new players to their games and keep current players playing them. The Nightmare on Elm Street slot is a superb horror-themed slot in which the player has to try to survive the night and stay one step ahead of the disfigured, bladed-gloved killer Freddie Kruger, who was played to chilling effect by Robert Englund in the original movie.
The theme of this popular slot remains close to the storyline of the movie, in which the protagonist would invade the dreams of his victims and terrorize them, and has some awesome features, such as the Never Dream Again bonus game. Freddie’s glove represents the Scatter symbol and will reward you with 30 free spins if you land five of them. There are 30 paylines and two progressive jackpots. The 3D graphics make the game scary but immensely fun.
Friday the 13th: The Game
Who could forget “Friday the 13th” and the brutal 80s slasher Jason Vorhees? The “Friday the 13th: The Game” is a re-vamped version and is much better than the original game, which was, quite frankly, dreadful. This version is set in the same fictional location as the movie, Camp Crystal Lake, and the player is on the run from the murderous Jason Vorhees — but they don’t have to be because for the first time, players can choose to be Jason instead.
When players choose to be one of the counsellors who is fleeing from Jason, the game gives them all the tools they need to survive. The question is whether they can or not. If they’re playing Jason himself, they get to commit his heinous crimes in a variety of ways and spend the game stalking and tracking their victims. The game is as entertaining as it is gory and is a fabulous way to pass the time on Halloween with friends.
Aliens vs Predator
“Alien” and “Predator” were both popular movies and a genius in the Hollywood studios had the vision to bring the two together, which spawned a franchise of “Alien vs Predator” movies, to the delight of some fans. The original film follows an engineer and a team of archaeologists on an expedition to Antarctica, whose investigation lands them in the middle of a battle between the hunting ground of Predators who kill Aliens.
The game is just like the movie and treats the player to three different experiences. They can be the Marine, the Predator or the Alien. As the Marine, they’ll have explosives and high-tech weaponry, since they’re the last line of defense. As the Predator, they have some exotic weapons and can stalk and ambush their victims, although they’d prefer to take them on face to face. Last but not least, as the Alien, they’ve escaped and become the stuff of nightmares to the Marines and to the Predators.
The Thing
“The Thing” is an old movie but, like any true classic, scary. In the original, which came out in 1982, audiences saw lovable, mullet-haired loudmouth Kurt Russell lead a team of researchers in Antarctica against the unknown life form — the Thing — that absorbed and morphed into its victims. Almost 30 years later, in 2011, Hollywood then spoilt fans with a prequel to the film.
The games world decided to do the same thing — i.e. treat fans — and brought out a third-person shooter for PC owners. Just like in the film itself, it’s a game of fear, paranoia and suspense, with the team not knowing whether to trust the player and neither can the person playing be sure they’re team members and not the “Thing” itself. It’s unique in so far as that the player must manage the trust levels of the other characters (who are members of the team but are not other players): if the characters think they have a shapeshifter in their midst, they may betray the player.
Hollywood has gifted movie fans with a range of outstanding movies, with evil characters who, thankfully, don’t exist in real life (in most cases) and have been able to provide audiences with moments as shocking as they were entertaining. Their popularity has led to the creation of some fine video games so that players can relive the movies and have their own go at killing the bad guys or seeing how they fare against them, or even at being the bad guys themselves. Whichever side they’re on, the important thing to remember it’s just a game and not get too scared!
