Scary horror films haven't always gone to theaters or straight-to-DVD. There have been quite a few great ones that premiered on TV as well. Before the days of Netflix you could still occassionally catch the premiere of a new horror movie at the comfort of your own couch and still get a good scare out of it. Now, chances are you can watch all these on some sort of streaming platform, but what if you're a bit strapped for cash? Try signing up and get a special sign-up bonus at Virgin today. Meanwhile, here's my list of the top 5 made-for-tv horror films.
THE DARK NIGHT OF THE SCARECROW (1981)
Aired in the early 80's, this classic film was set in a small rural town where the townspeople wrongfully accuse and kill a mentally challenged man after the death of a young girl. Shortly after the man's death people start dying from the town and seeing visions of a scarecrow.
THE WOMAN IN BLACK (1989)
This is a British supernatural movie that aired on TV in the late 80's and eventually received a US remake in 2012, followed by a sequel a couple years later. However, the remake is nowhere near as haunting as the original movie, especially as it aired on TV. If you ever watch this movie, trust me when I say that you too will learn to fear the Woman in Black.
SALEM'S LOT (1979)
Adapted to TV from the classic Stephen King novel, the movie brought forth some of the creepiest looking vampires to ever grace the small screen. Whatever you do, if you hear a tapping at your window late at night, don't open it!
IT (1990)
Here's another obvious classic that's based on the work of Stephen King. The terrifying mini-series gave us Pennywise the clown, played by actor Tim Curry, who forever haunted our dreams if you caught it as it aired on TV. Even now, his performance still brings chills down the spines of viewers.
THE LEGEND OF LIZZIE BORDEN (1975)
Here's a movie that you don't hear about often, but what can be more spooky than a daughter being acquitted of murdering her own parents? This horror docu-drama tells the true tale of Lizzie Borden, who murdered her parents and then faced a lengthy court trial. It even dramatizes that she bathed in the blood of her victims.
