Evil Dead Burn could well be the highest-grossing movie in the franchise to date. Box office predictions say that the movie could earn between $20 and $30 million during the opening weekend, making up to $75 million in the US and Canada. Evil Dead Rise made $147.2 million with a budget of just $15 million. As Evil Dead Burn is on the same trajectory, it has every chance of surpassing the previous installment.
Book of the Dead
The movie is going to revolve around the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis, or the Book of the Dead. The book is a catalyst for everything that happens.
The idea of an ancient text unleashing chaos has been a running theme in history, with The Ninth Gate following a book dealer who searches for a demonic manuscript. In The Mouth of Madness, an author’s novels blur the lines between fiction and reality, and movies like The Black Phone also cover our fascination with the occult in horror. Podcasts also cover real-world ancient texts.
The Ancients from History Hit is a prime example. Tristan Hughes hosts the series and covers everything from The Dead Sea Scrolls to the papyri recovered from the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Interestingly, ancient texts are also a theme in iGaming.
The Book of Duat, one of many bingo slots online that use the “Book Of” theme, features Anna the Explorer as she hunts down the Book of Duat as a way to access hidden treasure. The game draws from Egyptian mythology, showing how varied the theme is and how it can stretch across numerous civilisations.
In a way, this is why The Evil Dead works so well, as it takes inspiration from ancient texts but transforms them into a thrilling story where reading the text summons Deadites.
Evil Dead Burn Returns with a New Storyline
Evil Dead Burn follows Alice, who is a grieving widow. She tries to find some comfort in her in-laws and ventures to their home during winter. In hopes that she will be reunited with her husband, she reads from the Necronomicon text, and before long, the family gathering turns into a nightmare.
Although she’s warned by her family that the book will summon the devil, her grief drives her to read from it anyway. Alice’s family is possessed one by one, and eventually the whole property is overrun.
A lot of the story does focus on Alice, but it also showcases the escalating threats as the demonic horde ends up taking over. Alice also discovers that the vows that they made in life have big consequences, even in death.
Although the film follows a familiar formula, it stays true to what made the franchise so beloved, which horror fans will appreciate. The new movie is set to drop in late July, with a digital release available for rent not long after, for those who don’t want to go to the cinema.
