Horror-Themed Games That Will Make You Laugh

The horror genre is one of those polarizing categories of popular culture that people either absolutely love or truly loathe. For those of us horror-seekers out there, sometimes we want a terrifying scare… and sometimes a ghoulish giggle.

There’s nothing better than relieving the tension of a spooky encounter with a bit of laughter to take the edge off. Some games build in the comedy on purpose through creating a truly bizarre game concept and some stumbled upon it through sheer incompetence. We’ve found some of the best horror-themed games out there that will have you laughing your socks off by the end.

Video games

The Typing of the Dead
Step into a world that is equal parts arcade game, B-movie, and keyboard typing practice. The Typing of the Dead is a hilarious on-rails zombie video game that guides you through a brief six-part story mode while you attempt to kill everything that you see.

This is no simple first-person shooter game, however. In order to take down enemies in the game, you’ll need to have your keyboard polished and your fingers at the ready. Destroying enemies is simple, hilarious, and frankly, tongue-in-cheek… it’s typing words. Instead of just shooting them, you have to type the specific word that is shown on them.

As you make your way through the game, you’ll explore a variety of locations, including city streets, experimental labs, and dank sewers. Each location you visit is jam-packed with disgusting and hideous creatures, like zombies, massive slugs, and chainsaw-wielding psychos.

Based on the game House of the Dead II, The Typing of the Dead is a unique take on its arcade predecessor. You can’t help but giggle at the hilarious concept: the hero surrounded by monsters, frantically typing phrases. Your typing skills, however, will be on-point by the end credits.

Pizza Delivery
Okay, even from the name you should already be cracking up. A horror video game called “Pizza Delivery”? Sounds more like a B-movie to me…

This game is a true comedy ride from start to finish from its name to its visuals to the entire concept itself. Picture this. You’re a pizza delivery driver on your last delivery of the night and true to horror-trope fashion, everything goes wrong.

Strap in for a ghoulishly silly adventure filled with Michael Jackson tunes, floating corpses, and mysterious trails of pizza everywhere. It’s hard to get more horror comedy than this.

Abandoned
Sometimes a horror video game is created with such a low budget that the “scares” themselves are the cause for laughter. Abandoned is one of those.

Looking like it stepped out of the ’90s made entirely in Microsoft Paint with sound effects from an equally-’90s midi ringtone cell phone, this attempt at a thrill fest is so bad it’s funny.

As you walk painfully slowly down a deserted street, you’ll find yourself in front of an obviously haunted house. Once inside, everything seems to go wrong (wait, did you have a plan in the first place?) when you receive creepy messages, hear strange noises from the radio, and witness headless stalkers following you around the house.

There might be a few real jump-scares hidden away in this low budget gem but I wouldn’t dare spoil the ending.

Get ready for real thrills

When you’ve had your fill of video games, try out some some real high-stakes thrills. For more spooky excitement (but with a jackpot at the end), try your luck at playing horror-themed no risk slot games where you’ll really get your heart racing.

Step into a world of vampires, zombies, ghosts, and things that go bump in the night — and spice up your horror gaming with spooky thrills and a chance to win big.

Terrifyingly fun board games

If you’ve seen all the films and played all of the video games, you can also check out some hilarious horror board games like Betrayal at House on the Hill and Last Night on Earth.

Betrayal at House on the Hill
In Betrayal, you’ll find yourself wandering around a haunted mansion with several random weirdos trying to explore all the rooms. But wait! One of your group is actually a hidden traitor bent on some kind of malevolent plan!

More Scooby-Doo than Exorcist, get ready to play out every B-movie horror trope you’ve ever seen from an ax-wielding murderer, angry poltergeist, to zombies crawling the walls in this scare-tastic adventure where no two games are ever alike.

Last Night on Earth
Isn’t that the line the guy always uses in the disaster movies to get the girl before the world ends? Well, that’s exactly what’s going on here too! Except… zombies.

Lots and lots of zombies. This board game pays homage to the classic zombie genre and does it with style. From the beautiful artwork and visuals to the flavor text throughout, you’ll truly think you’ve stepped into the Dawn of the Dead.
