Are you ready for a horror movie containing the greatest zombie cast EVER assembled? If your answer is ‘Hell Yea!’ then you are in luck! The Dead Don’t Die’s cast contains this exact cast, at least according to the trailer for the movie. Bill Murray… Steve Buscemi… Tilda Swinton… Adam Driver… Selena Gomez… Iggy Pop…The fictional town of Centerville is populated with A list celebs who are ready and waiting to be devoured by, you guessed it, man eating zombies!
This movie is unlikely to turn your pallor cadaverous, however. The Dead Don’t Die is definitely lurching into comedy horror territory rather than batshit scary horror so you’re unlikely to be too frightened by these zombies. Certainly, there is no shortage of run-of-the-mill zombie movies, TV series, video games and board games all centered around fighting the undead. In fact, a UK slot site recently reported that the zombie-bashing theme was common amongst its most popular slot games. Overdone and predictable as the genre may be, The Dead Don’t Die still holds promise of offering a refreshingly different take on zombies, given its fantastic aforementioned cast. Tilda Swinton plays a Scottish samurai sword wielding mortician – what else can you ask for in a zombie film?
The film is written and directed by Jim Jarmusch of ‘Only Lovers Left Alive’ and ‘Paterson’ fame. Despite the trailer or maybe as a consequence of the trailer, it is deceivingly hard to tell what direction this movie will go towards. There is an impression that the film will be in the vein of a B-movie from the 60’s or 70’s but it could also be a straight up comedy. Perhaps the director will try to combine the two or maybe he is going for something entirely unseen, its hard to tell and that just makes The Dead Don’t Die even more appealing! The footage looks to be shot day-for-night meaning that the film is shot during the day but manipulated to look like night-time – another interesting aspect to the movie.
Jarmusch himself is a self-proclaimed ‘amateur’ when it comes to filmmaking. He enjoys being outside of the Hollywood studio system going as far as to call himself ‘not a professional filmmaker.” Jarmusch has played about with different genres of films from crime flicks, to westerns. He has even dipped into vampire movies. A keen musician, Jarmusch enjoys the creative outlet that filmography and music give him – he is an artist and likes to do things his own way.
If you are expecting to be caught up in a zombie apocalypse anytime soon then The Dead Don’t Die tells you exactly how to deal with such a situation: Number One: Choose a weapon. Number Two: Kill the Head. Number Three: Repeat. The film is certainly goofy, and some fans feel that it is likely to creep into plain old silly territory but that remains to be seen. Adam Drivers dead tone delivery of lines will ensure that the film does not become Jim Carrey silly, so that’s a plus point given nobody can do it like Carrey. Furthermore, the fantastic cast will ensure that even if the movie does step over the line into silliness then the actors will be able to pull it off.
The movie trailer showcases so little so I cannot help but feel that Jarmusch is hiding something bigger with this movie. Adam Driver and Bill Murray will obviously draw the audience’s, so I am really hoping that Jarmusch give audiences more than just an all-star cast. But excitement is undeniably peaking for the release of The Dead Don’t Die. Really looking forward to seeing this film. The trailers have been such a tease and watching Kylo Ren kick some zombie ass could be a major highlight of 2019 for me. As long as it’s not like Zombieland I think this movie has all the features to be fantastic, I just hope Jarmusch manages to sync everything together successfully.
The Dead Don’t Die will have its world premiere as the opening film at the Cannes Film Festival on May 14th 2019 and is scheduled for cinema release on June 14th 2019. You can read more about the movie here.
