Horror movies have really hit their stride over the last few years where we have seen some of the most creative and spine-chilling stories we've seen in ages. With this momentum, 2025 looks set to be another killer year for horror fans.
And if you thought the horror genre was dead, think again; horror movies have always been a rich source of inspiration, influencing everything from fashion, art, and music to video games.
Nowadays, you'll come across a variety of horror-themed slots on websites like Temple of Games where players can experience the raw thrill of high-stakes drama as if they were part of a horror film themselves.
That being said, the horror genre's impact is far from over, as the big screen gears up for more thrills. In this article, we cover five of the most anticipated horror films and sequels coming to theaters in 2025.
The Monkey (February 21)
After the surprise hit that "Longlegs" was at the box office, fans won't have to wait long for Osgood Perkins' next project. He's once again teaming up with Neon, who clinched the rights in what was apparently a hot bidding war, for "The Monkey."
This film centers on twin brothers Hal and Bill, both played by Theo James, who find themselves in a nightmare when they uncover their dad's creepy old toy monkey in the attic.
Oh, and spoiler alert: Each time the monkey's cymbals come together with a clash, someone meets a gruesome end. Will Hal and Bill manage to lift the curse before it's too late?
And if Perkins' growing reputation in the horror scene wasn't thrilling enough, know that "The Monkey" is also based on a chilling tale by Stephen King.
Opus (March 14)
Not much is known about "Opus," the first psychological horror venture by director Mark Anthony Green, but the intriguing synopsis and stellar cast, featuring Ayo Edebiri from "The Bear" and the legendary John Malkovich, have us all buzzing with curiosity.
The synopsis follows a young writer who gets an invite to the secluded estate of a famous pop star who vanished three decades ago. She's thrown into a world of sycophants and inebriated reporters, right in the heart of the star's sinister scheme. This is Mark Anthony Green's first feature film that’s a vibrant and daring mix of pop and horror. Ayo Edebiri shines as Ariel, the unassuming yet ambitious journalist, her charisma lighting up the screen with a clear "final girl" vibe. John Malkovich is spellbinding as Moretti, the once-celebrated icon now making a chilling comeback.
Sinners (April 18)
Just hearing that Michael B. Jordan and Ryan Coogler are behind "Sinners" is enough to spark more anticipation. Add a chilling trailer showing a small town post-WWII dealing with some dark force, with Jordan portraying twin brothers alongside Hailee Steinfeld and Wunmi Mosaku, and it's clear why this film is a must-watch.
There's buzz that it might be a vampire flick, but the trailer plays its cards close to the chest. "Sinners" seems to be full of surprises, especially since you can spot a DJ and a boombox in the crowd at the end of the trailer, something that certainly clashes with the period setting.
28 Years Later (June 20)
The trailer for this one did get people talking when it dropped not too long ago, and it wasn't just the horror fans who got excited. Danny Boyle's "28 Days Later" and "28 Weeks Later" have had enough time to become ingrained in pop culture while stirring up some serious nostalgia. Now, with Boyle returning to the director's chair and teaming up with Alex Garland, who wrote the original and has since made a name for himself as a director, anticipation is through the roof.
And let's not forget the stellar cast with the likes of Ralph Fiennes, Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jack O'Connell, Alfie Williams, and the debunked theory of Cillian Murphy returning as a zombie character. Taking place almost three decades post the initial zombie outbreak, this eagerly anticipated follow-up to the earlier films delves into the shattered remains of society that is still clawing its way back from the brink.
M3GAN 2.0 (June 27)
Brace yourselves for more eerie dance moves and savage action because the beloved yet deadly robot toy is making a comeback in “M3GAN 2.0.” While the story details are under wraps, Allison Williams and Violet McGraw are back as Gemma and Cady to continue their saga against the rogue doll.
It seems likely that M3GAN will be attempting to step into Gemma's shoes as Cady's guardian after the chaotic conclusion of the first movie. Amie Donald will once again embody the android, with Jenna Davis lending her voice to the character.
That’s it, folks! Those are our top five upcoming horror films this year, or at least, the first half of the year, that promise to deliver spine-tingling scares, some dramatic twists and turns, and a chilling reminder of why we love to be frightened!
