Horror lovers over the last few years have been treated to a wave of strong studio films, and so far, 2019 has seen some divisive material release although the returns have been strong regardless. With limited and Indie releases delivering the goods this next decade is looking to close out on a high with such titles as Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark – Doctor Sleep – It Chapter Two and Crawl.
Not only is it the horror movie genre that has been enjoying immense popularity – games and books have also enjoyed a revival with new titles on the shelves or pages popping up each day. Lovers of the scary genre can even enjoy slots games based on the most popular horror movies and here we can see how the games developers and movie producers collaborate in order to fill the niche which is craved by so many.
2019 has so far unleashed a few tasty morsels on us and Christopher London's follow up the successful Happy Death Day which took a step back from the slasher set-up and instead expands the mythology behind the time loops in an amazing love letter to the 1980’s.
This diversion from the norm meant that the sequel was not quite a popular as its predecessor but it was artfully delivered and Jessica Rothe once again stole the show bringing laughs and tears in equal measure.
CLIMAX (Gaspar Noé)
Climax is arguably Gaspar Noe’s most appealing film so far. It’s a very uncomfortable watch and a visual feast where a group of dancers get together in an empty school building to dance the night away but of course someone has to spike the drink with LSD resulting in the dancer's nightmares become reality.
KNIFE+HEART (Yann Gonzalez)
Take a producer of low budget gay porn (Anne) and her lover who also is her film editor leaves leads us up the path where Anne decides to make her most ambitious film in an attempt to win her lover back. Sounds fine until a masked killer who is picking off her cast and crew one by one is thrown into the mix. Complete with everything this type of horror film needs – masks – gore and tension Knife + Heart has it all.
PIERCING (Nicolas Pesce)
From the author of Audition, Piercing is based on the novel of the same name and is a type of twisted love story. Facing and also dealing with the stress and strain of dealing with a new-born, family man Red (who is played by Christopher Abbot) checks himself into a hotel whilst on business, or so we are led to believe. What he is actually planning is to murder an escort that he has ordered to his room –but Reed gets far more than he planned. Directed by Nicolas Pesce who also directed Grudge and The Eyes of My Mother) this bloody little offering plays a bloody cat and mouse game.
I TRAPPED THE DEVIL (Josh Lobo)
Put psychological terror, the Christmas season and the devil together and you know you are going to be viewing something rather disturbing. Josh Lobo’s film is a classic portrayal of grief and familial guilt in I Trapped the Devil and it's well worth a view as you are drawn into the paranoia portrayed perfectly by the three main leads.
