PROJECT DETAILS:
This project is currently rumored at the moment, as a report from Hollywood insider Jeff Sneider has revealed that actor/producer Ryan Gosling is producing the remake. Not much else has been revealed and nothing official has been released, so you can treat this as a rumor. (4/15/25)

An asymmetrical survival horror game based on the movie was developed and released on various platforms in June of 2024.

In 2023 Stephen Chiodo reportedly looked to pursue a series that would go to streaming, saying: "My goal is to do an eight-part miniseries for streamers… We’ll follow a new group of teenagers who come upon the clowns and meet a drunk living in his van — it’s Mike Tobacco. There’s a big invasion, and we end up on the clown planet."

Back in 2018 there were talks that SyFy was interested in making one or more sequels, but plans fell through due to budget constraints.

In 2016 original director Stephen Chiodo elaborated on how the story for a new installment (or installments) would go, this time in the form of a potential television series, saying: "We want to take some of the characters we had in the original film and do a new film that has new characters having their little adventures with Klowns, but also revisit some of the people we’ve seen in the past. Instead of a theatrical release, we’re thinking of going to television. We’ve got this great idea. Sort of like a trilogy in four parts, with the original film being the first, and then we have an idea for a trilogy that would just be a long-ranging series that follows new characters as they battle Klowns, but then we also see Mike Tobacco pop up. And then we see Debbie Stone. And then we see Dave the cop. We’ve got it all written out. It’s a fantastic concept."

In 2012 news of a "requel" (remake-sequel) was floated around with the idea that it would also be in 3D. It had the title The Return of the Killer Klowns from Outer Space and according to actor Grant Cramer (Mike Tobacco from the first movie) the story was reportedly the following: "The idea is that there may be multiple sequels, and in each one, there’ll be one character [from the first movie] who carries over. So we’ll pick up where each of them has ended up in some new small town, and happen to be there when the Klown stuff happens again. My character ended up being the first one, and I think it was one of the Chiodos who came up with the idea that everybody thinks Mike Tobacco is crazy. He’s kind of the town drunk/derelict who’s always mumbling about the Klowns coming back, and everybody thinks I’m nuts, because I’m sure they’re going to return to attack the world again. And of course, when it happens, I have been planning for them to come back, so I end up being the mentor to these two young street performers whose car breaks down, and they end up in the small town of Kismet. It’s another town up in the mountains, and now all the fun begins again, except when they get into trouble, Mike comes up and teaches them the history of the Klowns and how to fight back against them. He’s somewhere between the energy of Kris Kristofferson’s character in BLADE and Christopher Lloyd’s character in BACK TO THE FUTURE." (8/5/2021)

The Chiodo Bros. have been trying to get another installment off the ground since the release of the first movie in the 80s'.

This is said to be a remake of the classic 1988 horror comedy with the same name from the Chiodo Bros.
