It seems that the previous report from EW that Hayden Panettiere would return as Kirby may have been premature, as they've updated with a correction stating that her appearance in the movie hasn't been confirmed. (9/22/25)

Hayden Panettiere returns as the Kirby character that was introduced in Scream 4 and who returned in Scream 6 as an FBI special agent. Her character will reportedly return in this movie assisting Neve Campbell's Sidney Prescott. (9/21/25)

Co-writer Guy Busick had a recent interview where he revealed various details on the upcoming sequel. First, he talks about Neve Campbell's return as Sidney, saying: "I don’t want to give anything away about the reason [Scream 7] had to be a Sidney movie because there’s a really cool reason. There is a really specific reason why Sidney is in this movie. I will say there is a reason and we were happy with it when we cracked it. We went to Neve Campbell and said, ‘This is why. This is why Sidney now.’ Neve was like, ‘Oh, I get that.’ I pitched Kevin [Williamson] this first, too. He got it and then I pitched the studio. I came up with the story with my co-writer on [Scream] 5 and 6, James Vanderbilt." He then teases some minor details on the film's potential new location and how long after the last movie it takes place, saying: "I don’t want to be the one to spoil where it is. It’s an unspecified amount of time [after VI]. I might get contradicted by other people, but in my mind, more than two years. I would say at least two years. It could be two years, but I would say two years plus." (5/29/25)

David Arquette is reportedly returning as Deputy Dewey Riley, despite his death in part 5. He joins Matthew Lillard and Scott Foley in returning from the dead. (3/4/25)

Ethan Embry (Can't Hardly Wait, First Man, Grace & Frankie) has joined the cast in an unspecified role. (2/3/25)

Apparently Matthew Lillard is reportedly somehow coming back in this movie. I'm sure fans may remember him as one of the killers from the first movie. (1/31/25)

Actor Scott Foley is reportedly in the film in some capacity. Fans may remember him as "Roman Bridger, the film director and half-brother of Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) who was revealed to be the Ghostface Killer of Scream 3." The character died at the end of the film, so it's currently unknown how he'll return. (1/30/25)

Jasmin Savoy Brown returns as "Mindy Meeks-Martin."

Joel McHale plays "Mark Evans," who is reportedly Sidney Prescott's husband.

Mason Gooding returns as "Chad Meeks-Martin." (12/17/24)

Isabel May (1883 series) has joined the cast and will be playing Sidney Prescott's daughter. (11/21/24)

Neve Campbell recently revealed that the story will go "back to basics" and focus on the Sidney Prescott character once again. (7/31/24)

There's a rumor floating around that this new film will feature a time jump and will have Sidney's kids play a big role in the movie. It's said to be the start of a possible new trilogy. Keep in mind that these are rumors and at the moment nothing has been officially revealed. (5/31/24)

It looks like Courteney Cox may return as "Gale Weathers." Recent reports indicate that she's in talks to return to the franchise. (3/29/24)

It comes to no real surprise to see that Neve Campbell is now officially returning as Sidney Prescott. She revealed the news via Instagram, which also included the fact that original Scream writer Kevin Williamson will also direct. This would mark the writer's second foray into directing, with his debut being 1999's Teaching Mrs. Tingle. Here's what Neve had to say: "Hi All. I’m so excited to announce this news!!! Sidney Prescott is coming back!!!! It’s always been such a blast and an honor to get to play Sidney in the Scream movies. My appreciation for these films and for what they have meant to me, has never waned. I’m very happy and proud to say I’ve been asked, in the most respectful way, to bring Sidney back to the screen and I couldn’t be more thrilled!!! Well actually I could. While I’ve been so incredibly lucky to make these films with both the master of horror Wes Craven and the wonderfully talented Matt and Tyler team, I’ve dreamt for many years of how amazing it would be to make one of these movies with Kevin Williamson at the helm. And now it’s happening, Kevin Williamson is going to direct Scream 7! This was his baby and it’s his brilliant mind that dreamt up this world. Kevin is not just an inspiration as an artist but has been a dear friend for many years. To the amazing Scream fans, I hope you are as excited as I am. See you on set @kevwilliamson" (3/12/24)

Actress Neve Campbell recently revealed that she'd return to the franchise "under the right circumstances." Fans may remember that she declined to reprise her role in the last movie due to a pay dispute, but with the studio now scrambling to try and fix a troubled production, it would make sense for them to turn back to Neve. Whether that happens or not remains to be seen, but here's what Neve had to say about the ordeal: "It’s sad to me that they’re struggling at the moment. I would imagine that the people at the top are spinning a little bit, trying to make the right decision. I think I would imagine people want to do the right thing. I would hope. I love this franchise. I love it for Wes [Craven]. I love it for all the people who’ve been involved and even the newer cast. I would hope it doesn’t fall apart." And when asked if she'd return, she said the following: "Given the right circumstances? Yes. I made a statement several years ago, and it was the reason that I didn’t do the film at the time, and I just really felt the need to stand up and say that I don’t believe I would’ve been treated that way had I been a man carrying a franchise for 25 years, and that still stands. So if they were to choose to come back to me, that would continue to be my takeaway. We’ll see." (1/15/24)

Director Christopher Landon (Happy Death Day, Freaky, We Have a Ghost) has apparently the left the project, saying the following via social media: "I guess now is as good a time as any to announce I formally exited Scream 7 weeks ago. This will disappoint some and delight others. It was a dream job that turned into a nightmare. And my heart did break for everyone involved. Everyone. But it’s time to move on. I have nothing more to add to the conversation other than I hope Wes’ legacy thrives and lifts above the din of  a divided world. What he and Kevin created is something amazing and I was honored to have even the briefest moment basking in their glow." (12/27/23)

It looks like next to Melissa Barrera not returning, Jenna Ortega will also not be back due to scheduling conflicts with the Netflix series Wednesday. According to Variety, writers James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick knew this and were already working on a new script without her appearance, but now with Melissa Barrera's exit they'll need to find new protagonists and a fresh script all together. It's possible we may see the return of Neve Campbell's character, who passed on the last film due to a salary dispute. Either way, the filmmakers are still hoping for a release sometime in 2025, but whether they actually make that happen remains to be seen. (11/25/23)

It's been revealed that the studio has reportedly fired actress Melissa Barrera (Sam Carpenter, sister of Jenna Ortega’s Tara Carpenter) from the film due to some controversial social media posts. The project is still in development, as things slowed down due to the recent writers/actors strikes, which only recently ended. Now the studio is "expected to recalibrate plans" after Barrera's firing. (11/21/23)

Early in development it was believed that Jenna Ortega, Melissa Barrera and Mason Gooding were all expected to return.

Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (directors of the last two films) will not return to helm this new sequel, as they have another project in development.

This is the seventh installment in the Scream franchise.
