It looks like things are finally moving forward with this project, as it was recently revealed that comedian Kenan Thompson's new production banner AFA has acquired the remake rights to the project and has set original writer/director Robert Hiltzik to return. The script is currently in development, with Hiltzik quoted saying: "I am both thrilled and humbled to be working with AFA on the reimagined Sleepaway Camp. Though I have been approached by several companies regarding the remake of Sleepaway Camp, only AFA has shared my vision and is excited to have me helm the film, therefore preserving the integrity of the original film for the fans, as well as introducing Sleepaway Camp to a whole new generation. Be prepared for a new member of the Sleepaway Camp family." One of the film's producers was quoted saying: "We’re staying true to the OG story while Robert adding in some insane new twists, we’re going crazy with the merch too!" (9/18/25)
Felissa Rose spoke about a new movie in an interview revealing little outside of something is definitely brewing in the Sleepaway Camp universe. Here's what she had to say: "I will say this, because there's been so much looming around the Sleepaway Camp universe for so long. Will they remake it? Will there be another sequel? I know that something's in the works. I don't even really know exactly how it will be, but I can tell you that definitely like-we just had our 37th anniversary-I would love to say that, mark my words, by the 40th, something will be out." (12/2/2020)
According to producer Jeff Katz this is a sequel that's intended to reboot the franchise and doesn't ignore any of the previous installments, saying: "..you resolve her character while setting up the events of the new movie, which are tied directly to her and in a way which allows you to honor the original but spin off in an entirely new direction." (8/18/16)
The original rumored plot was as follows: "The story is said to begin with Angela (Felissa Rose) who has been locked up in Smith's Grove Sanitarium for years. She escapes after taking a nurse hostage and seeks refuge at the original camp from the 1983 film, Camp Arawak."
The old producers originally wanted actress Felissa Rose to reprise her role as Angela.
Originally, it was said that the producers intended to "reboot the Sleepaway Camp mythos in a modern setting with a new film series that echoes its legacy and the psychosexual elements that made the first pic such a memorable cult favorite"
Original writer/director Robert Hiltzik returns.
The original 1983 movie was made for roughly $350,000 (with a cast of unknowns) and reportedly grossed around $11-million and has since become a cult favorite among fans. The movie would go on to spawn the Michael A. Simpson-directed sequels Sleepaway Camp II: Unhappy Campers (1988) and Sleepaway Camp III: Teenage Wasteland (1989), which starred Pamela Springsteen (rocker Bruce Springsteen's sister). Original director Robert Hiltzik would eventually return for 2008's Return to Sleepaway Camp, which was a direct sequel to the original (ignoring the previous sequels). Another installment from Hiltzik titled Sleepaway Camp Reunion 3D was planned (which would end the new trilogy), but was eventually scrapped.
When this project was first announced in 2013 it was said to be a remake of the 1983 movie, then in 2016 the producers revealed that they're instead doing a reboot/sequel. Now, the new producers for the project are looking to once again pursue a remake or "reimagining."
