Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett had an interview recently where they described this movie as a "dream project" and that the script is "just really, really beautiful and scary and sweeping, and it's awesome." Adding that it "had all of the heart and the character that you could hope for." Lastly, saying: "I don't think Brendan [Fraser] and Rachel [Weisz] are getting involved unless they love that script, and what they read, I think they really liked. And it's a good script. It's gonna be fun to make." When asked if the third film with Jet Li was cannon, they replied with "Well, Rachel is in this one. That should answer the question for you." (3/4/26)

Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz have officially signed onto the movie, which has been dated for a May 2028 theatrical release. Co-director Tyler Gillett said the following about the movie: "Having stepped into Scream, our radar for jumping into another franchise is that it has to feel special. And [David Coggeshall’s] script really does that. It is very beautiful and sweeping and scary and fun." (2/10/26)

Brendan Fraser had a recent interview where he briefly touched on this upcoming sequel, revealing that this is the sequel that he's been wanting to make for 20 years. Here's what he had to say: "The one I wanted to make was never made. The third one was a model of … how can I say this to the AP reporter? NBC had the rights to broadcast the Olympics that year. So they put two together and we went to China. Working in Shanghai, an incredible experience. I’m proud of the third one because I think it’s a good standalone movie. We picked up and did what we do with a different crew on deck and gave it our best shot. But the one I wanted to make is forthcoming. And I’ve been waiting 20 years for this call. Sometimes it was loud, sometimes it was a faint telegraph. Now? It’s time to give the fans what they want." (11/20/25)

Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are reportedly in talks to reprise their roles from the original films. (11/4/25)

Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (directing duo also known as "Radio Silence" and directors of Ready or Not and Scream 5 and 6) are reportedly directing.

Written by David Coggeshall (Orphan: First Kill, The Family Plan, The Deliverance).

The film is rumored to be ignoring the events of the third film.

This is said to be a new sequel to the classic The Mummy franchise that starred Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz.
