Jack (Christopher) and Chloe (Laferriere) are typical Canadian newlyweds who take a typical honeymoon to Miami, hoping to reconnect after a miscarriage and apparent money troubles which have been looming over them throughout their relationship. But this jaunt to Florida will prove to be anything but typical.
Immediately after arriving at their low-budget hotel, they meet Wendy and Wayne, a swinging couple who love parties and cocaine. When the young couple agree to join the festivities, jealous sparks fly and the first of many fights ensue. As their recent commitment (mostly driven by fear, guilt and resentment) boils over with bitterness, Chloe and Jack take a drive to Key Biscayne where they encounter an extremely delusional beach bum who unloads his drugs and fantasies upon the visitors, before disappearing into the ocean. So, what would you do in such a strange situation? The drugs, of course!
As Chloe contemplates whether to ingest this suggestible “peyote”, she placates her husband who is begging her to be freer and more spontaneous.
Now, this is where the story jumps into high gear, so buckle up for a delicious ride…
Eleven hours pass through severe hallucinations involving laughter, tears, partial paralysis, rough sex and of course…paranoia. While their appetites grow (always for rare steak and alcohol), so does their insatiability for human flesh. Although Jack inflicts pain when biting his bride during a stint of cunnilingus, Chloe vigorously rips a chunk of meat from Jack’s shoulder and chomps it down as if it were her last meal. They wake up covered in blood, wondering what just happened and (as often heard before), “we will never do that again!”
Well, we all know that wouldn’t last, especially when Jack’s craving for more drugs pushes him to spike Chloe’s salsa, so they can trip together again. Once the anger of being forcibly doped subsides, they both freefall into complete hypnotic consumption, sinking into primal lust and violence that has taken over their minds. When Wayne comes around searching for his now missing wife, Wendy, we discover just how sadistic the Canadian couple have become.
Laferriere’s performance is powerful as Chloe transforms from a level-headed, career-driven woman into a shameless and controlling succubus, who takes the upper hand of what is now their nightmare in paradise. She compliments Christopher’s Jack, who has unequivocally swapped places with his formerly mousy partner, now needing consolation and calming during these drug-fueled escapades. It’s a psychedelic recipe for a terrible result, but it’s worth taking the tasty class.
