Mindy (Fox) is a young, widowed mother who spends her days in deep melancholy isolation to protect her 10-year-old daughter Alice from a most fearful monster that is slowly eating Mindy alive. Sounds bizarre, yes…but the intrigue of complexity is mind numbing and exhausting. Yet, you will want to join her on this nightmarish journey, just to find relief at the end of the trauma.
As Mindy wanders in a trance-like state throughout her house, hoping to speak to Alice now and then (who is staying with her grandma while mommy “gets her shit together”), the sound of a dinner bell jingles incessantly and stirs up the dread that permanently resides in Mindy’s body and soul. It’s a lonely existence, creating a haggard and fragile shell of a woman who is literally being controlled and fed upon by a mysteriously vile creature, inhabiting the basement. Little Bites is excruciatingly painful to watch Mindy wither away in desperate despair, succumbing to this evil beast in order to shield her daughter from a similar fate. The love of your child will conquer all, right?
Krsy Fox’s performance is nothing short of mesmerizing. Just watching her drift off in misery during the feeding sessions with the monster, Agyar (incredibly portrayed by Sklaroff!) will break your heart, especially during their talk of God. “He doesn’t hate you. He just doesn’t care” followed by Agyar chewing at her flesh will send shivers down your spine with complete disgust.
While she suffers in silence, CPS is on the move to investigate Alice’s whereabouts and treatment, just to throw another log onto the fire of this terrible situation. And if you’re asking about a possible food source replacement to satiate Agyar, think again. Apparently, the idea of substituting Mindy for a stranger such as Paul (yay for Chaz Bono!), is appalling to this picky eater.
Little Bites is depressing, dismal, and disheartening. In other words, it is one of the best horror films of 2024. Writer and Director Spider One teams up with familiar faces once again, alongside his exceptional wife Krsy Fox, creating pure magic and tragedy. And you will not expect the ending that is just waiting to devour this unique story. Bring your appetite.
