SiREN (2016)

REVIEWER RATING:
7/10

Gregg Bishop (Dance of the Dead) helms this spinoff of the "Amateur Night" segment from the V/H/S horror anthology, which depicted a few horny dudes looking to pick up some chicks for the night. Unbeknownst to them, one of the ladies they bring to their motel is some sort of winged creature who calls herself Lily, and unfortunately for the guys the rest of the night doesn't exactly go as planned.

Luckily they drop the found footage aspect in this full length version, which follows four friends on their way to a strip club for a bachelor party with the groom-to-be, Jonah. When the strip club turns out to be a bust, a stranger entices them to visit a prestigious and secretive (sort of) sex club. Thinking it's the only way to make up for a lackluster night, they head to the club where they encounter a number of eccentric people, including its charismatic host, Mr. Nyx (Justin Welborn).

Mr. Nyx eventually leads Jonah to a dark booth where he becomes entranced by Lily (played by the same actress), who sings him a song that sends shivers through his body. Feeling a little amped and heroic, Jonah decides to free Lily from her locked room, not realizing that he just released a deadly creature that will stop at nothing to force sexy time on her chosen mate (that's a bad thing, weirdos) and that just so happens to be Jonah. The rest of the night is just the guys trying to get away from Lily and Mr. Nyx, who's hunting them down.

While most movies based on shorts end up worse than their source material, this turned out to be a surprisingly fun creature feature. It also helped that the tone was fairly light and comedic, specifically in the first half. And sure the CG effects were dodgy at times and a majority of the leads were obnoxious, but the pacing was good and it offered a fairly creative storyline and antagonist. There's even an intriguing subplot involving the club itself and Mr. Nyx and his crew of supernatural beings that work for him, which would've been great to see explored more (sequel perhaps?).

Ignoring some of the cheesy CG used in certain scenes, the effects are mostly practical and well done, especially concerning the look of Lily when she transformed, which fortunately didn't differ much from the original (from what I could remember anyway). We also got more background on Lily, while still keeping us in the dark with other things, which is fine since too much exposition tends to hurt a flick. There's not a whole lot of gore, but the gore it did have (in the few scenes) were pretty good and by the end of the movie it proved to be an overall entertaining creature feature.

Fans of the short will enjoy the fact that more is explored in this full length feature, along with being introduced to some cool new ideas (like a supernatural sex club). All that, combined with solid pacing and comedic tone, made this an all around fun creature feature that's definitely worth checking out.
