Underworld: Blood Wars (2016)

REVIEWER RATING:
6/10

It's been four years since the last Underworld and within that timeframe the project has gone through a lot of changes--originally it started out as somewhat of a spinoff that was going to focus on Selene's daughter, but that idea was scrapped since it wasn't going to involve Kate Beckinsale, whom the studio believes to be the driving force behind the success of the series. While that may be the case, the film's latest box office numbers tell a somewhat different story, namely the fact that viewers may finally be getting tired of all these Underworld movies since it proved to be the weakest opening of all the sequels.

The story takes place sometime after the events of Awakening, where Selene is on the run from both Vampires and Lycans and has no idea WTF happened to Michael or where her daughter is. Meanwhile, the Lycans have a new leader named "Marius" (Tobias Menzies) who is slowly gathering a formidable army together, with the hopes of eventually attacking Vampire HQ. Selene makes her way to a secluded northern coven seeking sanctuary and in that process learns some fancy new moves and a new hairstyle that she takes back with her when the obligatory final battle occurs.

I have a soft spot for these Underworld movies, as I find them silly, but enjoyable popcorn entertainment. Sure the sequels get dumber as they go on, but at least the action is usually solid and the characters are interesting enough. Unfortunately that's not so much the case with this, where the action was sadly too few and far between and the new-ish characters they focus on aren't very appealing; though I liked Marius as the new baddie. And while it looked like an Underworld movie, it didn't quite feel like one since it seemed to be missing a lot of its signature badass imagery and action sequences. Even the gore seemed a bit lacking (except for a couple brief scenes).

Next to this new found power that Selene suddenly gets towards the end, there really isn't much here that makes it stand out among the rest of the films. However, we do get some long-awaited answers about Michael and finally learn the whereabouts of her missing daughter, which of course segue's into the next (and probably final) film.

At this point if you're not already into the movies then this sequel won't change your mind, especially since it's the weakest one in terms of action, story, and characters. Regardless, it has its moments and if you dig the series you'll probably dig this to some extent, despite its shortcomings.
