We live in a world where the horrors of real life are a lot more gruesome than what we see on the silver screen! Across countries, cases are emerging where political and religious beliefs are leading people to commit atrocities, without remorse or second thought. Thus, the fiction of horror films is slowly transforming into a reality, one that we might find hard to escape.
So, when we talk about horror films nowadays, more than the content of the movies, it is their reality that is frightening. Many believe that horror films are the best commentary on the political nature of the world today. But all is not yet lost. If there is one thing, just like the rules of horror films, we can still learn a little from them, to make informed decisions that can hopefully save us from the approaching doom.
Ready or Not
At the heart of any successful political campaign is the class divide. A good politician knows how to speak to the people in front of them and what will make them happy. However, in the end, it is the ones with money that want power and will do anything to hold on to it. Ready or Not takes this notion and adds an element of gore and absurdity to it. Recently married, Grace must survive her in-law’s onslaught for one night if she is to become a member of the family. The premise might seem odd, but at the heart of it is the notion that money makes the world go around, and that the rich can get away with murder.
The Purge
While the idea of the Purge franchise might seem a little bit of a far fetch, the reality isn’t that far away from it. The plot of the movies revolves around one night when anyone can kill anyone without any implications. The idea of killing for fun is horrific at its very core, but the film also showcases how prejudices and revenge are essential factors in this scenario. In the present political climate, we see Trump’s America racially divided and no less than a horror film in the making. It’s now up to the democratic candidates to present a strong front to take on the present administration when the next election comes. Else it won’t be a surprise to see a purge-like day taking place within the next few years.
The Cabin in the Woods
It’s not an outright political film, but The Cabin in the Woods looks at how we the people are sometimes treated as puppets without even knowing about it. The story is about a secluded cabin in the woods, visited by a bunch of friends who are not aware that the environment around them is controlled by a set of people sitting in an underground lab. The film takes inspiration from classic horror movies but is also an insight into how modern-day humans live a guilt-free life, not worried about the sufferings of others. Featuring elements of humour and the supernatural, the movie is a fun, yet a thought-provoking watch.
