There's a rumor that this third entry in the new trilogy is now in limbo, especially after Bone Temple not doing so well at the box office. Here's what's being said from World of Reel: "The last week, I’ve heard from two separate sources that Sony is in no rush to make the trilogy capper happen, despite announcing it last December. In fact, I’ve heard Netflix has shown some interest in acquiring the sequel, but Danny Boyle isn’t having any of it. He wants a theatrical release for this final chapter, which is supposed to star Cillian Murphy." Keep in mind that this is simply a rumor and should continue to be treated as such, until something more concrete or official is revealed. (2/18/26)
This project is officially in development now with Alex Garland back and currently scripting this latest addition. Danny Boyle (28 Days Later, 28 Years Later) is expected to return as director after expressing interest in the past in returning to helm this third installment. (12/10/25)
Actor Cillian Murphy is in talks to reprise his role as "Jim" from the very first movie. Murphy reportedly has a brief cameo towards the end of 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, which sets his character up for this next movie.
The 28 Years Later 3 title is tenatitive and will change as the project develops.
This is the fifth movie in the 28 Days Later franchise and the third installment in the new 28 Years Later trilogy.
