This sequel was originally announced shortly after the first film's debut and saw Eric Heisserer return to script and David F. Sandberg back as director, however, it went in and out of development over the next decade and never came to fruition. It now appears to be back in development, as the studio has hired up-and-comer Connor Osborne McIntyre to write the screenplay. David F. Sandberg also returns, but reportedly only as a producer, along with previous writer Eric Heisserer. (3/27/26)
This sequel was announced shortly after the first movie was released and it looks like there hasn't been much movement since and it's likely dead. Director David F. Sandberg essentially confirmed that this is no longer happening in a response to a fan asking about the sequel via social media. Here's what he said: "It’s been 9 years since that movie came out. I think the moment has passed. There was a script for a sequel but that particular script wouldn’t work now that Gabriel [Bateman, who played Martin in the first movie] is an adult." (3/31/25)
James Wan returns as producer through his Atomic Monster banner.
This is a sequel to the 2016 horror film Lights Out, which was an adaptation of the short film with the same name.
