Romero's former wife Christine Romero will reportedly be a creative overseer on the project. She was quoted saying: "I am so excited by this visionary team of storytellers that have come together to expand on the premise of the original film. Revisiting the world that George and his collaborators created is going to be a treat for fans. George would have been so happy to see this happen!"
Director Nikyatu Jusu (Nanny) was quoted saying: "The original version of Night of the Living Dead is still so resonant to this day. Every era has the zombie that it needs and right now, zombies reflect the ways that humans treat each other and show us who is truly the monster."
Writer LaToya Morgan (writer on series such as Shameless, Parenthood, Into the Badlands and The Walking Dead) was quoted saying: "[The original is] one of the great cornerstones of the horror genre. I’m beyond thrilled to be playing in the sandbox that George Romero built and ecstatic to raise the stakes and push the envelope with this exciting new story."
Romero's family will co-produce via their Sanibel Films banner.
There appears to be no relation to this project and the remake that was going to star Vivica A. Fox or Night of the Living Dead II, which brings back some of the original Day of the Dead cast. Both of those projects are currently in an unknown development stage.
The studio hopes that this will "reignite Night of the Living Dead as a franchise."
This is said to be a sequel to the original 1968 film from George A. Romero.
