Throughout the history of cinema, movie-makers have always relied on terrifying monsters and various scary creatures to elevate the films they’re bringing to mass audiences. These nasties are particularly prominent in the horror sphere, although they’re also seen outside of the movie genre altogether.
For example, when assessing the gaming category of entertainment, there has been an abundance of horrifying figures that have been heavily featured in some much-loved titles. There are human-like characters like Eddie Gluskin in Outlast Whistleblower, powerful dragons in titles like 8 Golden Dragon Challenge, and frightening monsters like Regenerador from Resident Evil 4. These nasty characters have been inspired by some of the greatest movie monsters ever, with some iconic creations living long in the memories of horror movie fans.
So, with that in mind, let’s take a brief look at some of the greatest movie monsters ever.
Count Dracula
Released in 1931, Dracula is an iconic movie fans of the horror genre tend to endorse. The title character from the memorable 1897 gothic horror novel, Count Dracula is considered by many as the archetypal vampire who has inspired so many vampire-themed movies that have emerged since this undoubted masterpiece. Count Dracula doesn’t just look scary, but the man playing him - named Bela Lugosi - manages to nail the role. For horror movie enthusiasts, Count Dracula is special.
Chucky
Is there anything more terrifying than a murderous evil doll? Well, if you’re aware of Chucky, then you’ll know exactly who we’re referring to. One of the most seasoned slasher villains we’ve ever had the privilege of watching, Chucky is a horror movie icon. From its odd head movements to its stitched style, the various versions of Chucky will never be forgotten. After all, dolls of this type are usually regarded as being cute and cuddly, but Chucky’s devilish ways are the complete opposite of that.
The Thing
As seen in the 1982 classic, The Thing isn’t exactly nice to look at. The main focus of one of the most revered horror movies ever, this alien organism is a horrifying beast. Taking over its victims and imitating them in a truly horrific manner, its spider-like design is a real threat.
Valak
If you’ve seen The Conjuring 2 before, then you’ll probably remember Valak. A demon who can’t be trusted, his distinct look is enough to send shivers down your spine. With a passion for possessing nuns at a secluded monastery, Valak’s evil side is particularly on show throughout the second installment of the series of movies. His nun form is another terrifying creation, with his ability to take control of human bodies being his main power.
Candyman
Who knew that standing in front of a mirror and saying “Candyman” five times would result in instant death, right? As seen in the 1992 release of Candyman, that’s exactly what occurs when a former slave with a tragic backstory returns to haunt the area he used to call home. From exposing bees in his chest to the deadly hook on his severed arm, this fearsome individual is a horror movie legend.
Pennywise
People all around the world are terrified of clowns, making characters like Pennywise and its all-round evilness a challenge to watch for many viewers. As seen in the 2017 release of It, the threatening clown is a creature that is almost impossible to forget, particularly as it preys on innocent youngsters while living in the sewers. The stuff of nightmares, Pennywise can even adapt into a variety of other forms, with every new transformation adding even more to the hair-raising package on show throughout this well-liked movie.
