Knock Knock (2015)

REVIEWER RATING:
4/10

Knock Knock is the latest tale from director Eli Roth, who has been a pretty busy guy as of late, mostly in the writing and producing front. A remake of the 1977 film Death Game, the movie stars Keanu Reeves as an architect/family man who stays home one weekend to get some work done while his family goes out of town. Sadly his much needed quiet time is cut short by a knock at the door late one stormy night.

The source is revealed to be a couple young girls supposedly looking for a party nearby. Drenched from the storm and unable to locate this so called "party," they're invited in to use the phone (apparently this excuse still works). Naturally it doesn't take long for the vixens to seduce Keanu into doing some debaucherous acts, and while it may seem like a good idea at the time, he'll soon discover that they're interested in more than just a little sexy time with an older man.

I've never seen the original film (or even heard of it until now), so I won't be comparing the two, but the premise did remind me a bit of the 1997 Austrian movie Funny Games, which is far superior in every way. Honestly this movie just seemed like a completely pointless waste of an hour and a half--not that it should come as much of a surprise since the trailer consisted of nothing more than a couple hotties messing with Keanu and that's essentially all that occurs.

After Keanu is seduced, the remaining hour of the movie details the mental and physical abuse on him by the girls, with many eye-roll inducing scenes and plot-holes along the way, ultimately leading up to absolutely NOTHING. In fact, we get one of the most anticlimactic endings I've personally seen in recent years. And I have no idea why Keanu was even cast as the lead, because his role could've easily gone to anyone else. Nothing against the man (he's not bad in some films), but it just seemed like he was barely trying here. The film is also pretty tame in comparison to Roth standards, where he normally likes to push boundaries and deliver in the blood and guts department. Here it just felt like he substituted all that for some extra sex and nudity.

Knock Knock proved to be a pointless effort, basically giving us a movie with some decent nudity, but very little everything else. This is made even worse by its anticlimactic ending. It's also fairly tame in the violence and gore aspects, which may disappoint some Roth fans. I'd recommend skipping this one.
