Race With the Devil (1975)

REVIEWER RATING:
7/10

I knew very little about this movie before seeing it, so I was pretty surprised when I found myself enjoying it. The story is simple and the directing is solid; added with the excellent cast of veteran actors and the movie is a pretty good thriller. When the film went the action route towards the end it just made things all-the-more interesting.

The movie tells the story of two vacationing thirty-something-to-middle-aged couples as they make their way to Colorado via their brand new RV. While on a stop to get some sleep, the group witness a bunch of Satanists perform some sort of sacrificial ritual out in some nearby fields. Naturally, the group is spotted by the Satanists and an hour-long game of cat and mouse begins. Each time the couples stop at a new town they have to watch their backs, as it seems that the Satanists may be more popular with the locals than it would seem...

I really enjoyed this film, it had the right amount of horror, action, and suspense; and considering I'm a fan of road movies where city-folk have to fend off locals, it was a given that I'd like this. Although, this isn't necessarily a horror flick, it definitely has loads of suspense, especially when we're constantly guessing where the townspeople are working with the Satanists. The movie plays with our heads, keeps us on the edge of our seats, and throws in a cool chase-sequence for good measure.

A solid action-suspense-thriller. This is a film that doesn't fall victim to predictability, especially towards the end; worth a check.
