They're Watching (2016)

REVIEWER RATING:
6/10

They're Watching is a horror comedy that pokes fun at the house hunting/repairing market, as we revolve around the crew behind a global reality TV show that helps find cheap homes for new couples. In this particular episode the show enlist the help of a local realtor (of sorts) to find the couple a nice place well within their budget, which just so happens to be a dilapidated "fixer upper" in some secluded tiny Eastern European village. Fast forward six months and we follow the film crew as they make their way back to the town to see how much progress they've made with the home.

The movie hits all the standard tropes we've come to expect from a film of this theme, specifically the clichéd "city folk" not mixing well with the superstitious locals, leaving you to wonder just how long before they start murdering everyone in the group. Unfortunately nothing really happens until an hour in and it's not until the last 15-minutes that shit REALLY hits the fan and takes a surprisingly gruesome and highly entertaining turn. I'd say the movie is worth sticking it out just for the final act, but it's not really worth investing your time unless you're into the comedy and dig the characters. The first hour mostly just consists of the crew keeping busy and trying their hardest to get along with the weird townspeople.

Some of the comedic aspects of the pic actually worked for me and I personally found the movie pretty amusing overall, at least enough to sit through without getting bored (for the most part). While the flick didn't really need to be shot in this found footage style, it's chosen approach didn't really bother me much either. Though, I think certain scenes would've been more effective had they just been filmed traditionally.

They're Watching is a pretty standard and unremarkable flick until the last 15-or-so minutes when it takes a surprising turn and makes up for a lot of the lackluster early bits of the film. Though, unless you like the characters and dig the comedy, the movie will likely be a chore to sit through since nothing really happens until an hour in. I personally found it entertaining (mostly), but comedy is subjective, so it may not work as well for you.
