The Windmill (2016)

REVIEWER RATING:
7/10

Also known as The Windmill Massacre, this English-language film comes to us from the Netherlands and follows a young Australian girl on the run from the authorities and hitches a ride with a tour bus that's roaming Holland's countryside for their "world famous windmills." After the bus breaks down the diverse group of travelers are forced to seek shelter at an abandoned shed, which just so happens to be near an old windmill that's rumored to once house a.. Devil-worshipping miller! (*GASP*)

The movie doesn't waste much time getting to the point since we get our first kill after about 20-minutes in, which came unexpected and was surprisingly gory. This set the tone for the rest of the film, which kept a solid pace until the very end. Unfortunately, not all the kills were as gory as the first, but the deaths were at least varied and still had their bloody/gory moments. Thankfully it was all mostly practical, with the occasional CG blood here and there (let us never speak of the bad CG fire).

Next to the gore, we have "The Miller" who was definitely a force to be reckoned with. While he did borrow from other familiar icons, he managed to stand on his own as memorable antagonist, from his burnt face and huge scythe, to the way he dispatched these characters. You couple that with some supernatural elements that were introduced fairly early on, and it all adds up to a pretty interesting baddy.

Though I liked the movie for the most part, obviously there's some room for improvement. Like the story, for instance, which has been been done quite a few times before, only this time we're in a more unfamiliar foreign setting. And with the standard horror tropes we also have these somewhat poorly written characters, but of course we weren't supposed to like them anyway, so that's not a huge issue.

Either way, the flick offered more positive than I saw negative and I'll give it points for keeping things well paced until the very end. And on the topic of the end, we got another pleasant surprise that I didn't quite see coming, which was good because by the time it was over I was already thoroughly entertained.

The movie isn't anything groundbreaking, but it's well paced, had some nice gory deaths, a cool killer, and some interesting supernatural elements. If that sounds like something up your alley then I'd recommend giving this a look.
