The Thing
Antarctica: an extraordinary continent of awesome beauty. It is also home to an isolated outpost where a discovery full of scientific possibility becomes a mission of survival when an alien is unearthed by a crew of international scientists.
The shape-shifting creature, accidentally unleashed at this marooned colony, has the ability to turn itself into a perfect replica of any living being. It can look just like you or me, but inside, it remains inhuman. In the thriller "The Thing," paranoia spreads like an epidemic among a group of researchers as they're infected, one by one, by a mystery from another planet.
Paleontologist Kate Lloyd (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) has traveled to the desolate region for the expedition of her lifetime. Joining a Norwegian scientific team that has stumbled across an extraterrestrial ship buried in the ice, she discovers an organism that seems to have died in the crash eons ago. But it is about to wake up.
When a simple experiment frees the alien from its frozen prison, Kate must join the crew's pilot, Carter (Joel Edgerton), to keep it from killing them off one at a time. And in this vast, intense land, a parasite that can mimic anything it touches will pit human against human as it tries to survive and flourish.

PROJECT DETAILS
- Filmed in Toronto and British Columbia, Canada.
- The film has received a delayed theatrical release to reshoot certain scenes and "enhance existing sequences or to make crystal clear a few story beats or to add punctuation marks to the film's feeling of dread."
- Originally slated with an April 29th 2011 theatrical release.
- Actress Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Final Destination 3, Black Christmas) stars.
- Aussie actor Joel Edgerton (Smokin' Aces, Acolytes) plays a merc. helicopter pilot.
- Strike Entertainment and the original 1982 film-version-producer David Foster will executive produce.
- It's said that this film will borrow heavily from the original short story 'Who Goes There?' by John W. Campbell Jr., which was the basis of the 1982 John Carpenter film and the 1951 Howard Hawks original, The Thing From Another World. Anyone who watches classic horror may recognise elements from these prior films.
- Co-scripted by Eric Heisserer and director Matthijs Van Heijningen.
- Battlestar Galactica writer/exec-producer Ronald D. Moore scripted an earlier draft.
- Set before the events that took place in John Carpenter's 1982 film.
- Originally announced as a remake, but was later revealed to be a sequel that would air as a two-part four-hour mini-series on the SyFy Channel. It's now considered to be a prequel and "re-imagining" of the series.

Saw the movie it was pretty good, now they need to make a sequel to the first movie and show what happens to the two that are left at the end of the first movie. >)
After 29 years, there's no way this one could have lived up to expectations. Very good, but not great. Too much CGI, but very good CGI. Kudos to Van Heijningen for taking it on. I'll let it go at that.
Just can't wait!!! it won't premiere in Norway until the 28th of october
(
I am eager to see this. Just worried about the CGI: I hope there isn't too much. I've been looking forward to this one for a while now.
Hopefully this movie does well enough to spawn an actual sequel after the John Carpenter's version or even the PS2 game, where the infection of the thing takes over a town. Instead of zombies, it will be all kinds of alien creatures. Get Guillermo del Toro on board for the alien designs.
John Carpenter`s "The Thing" from 1982 is one of my favourite films of all time. The creature that was the "thing" was perfectly depicted at the time, and still is. The feeling of not knowing who migth be infected is surrealisticly creepy by itself, not to mention the overall messed up atmosphere that became the center of the film. As the story progressed is something that could come out of an H.P Lovecraft story, but this my friends is John Carpenter. The man who brought us Halloween, The Fog and Escape from New York. He is a master of suspense. This film should be a homage to the original and I hope it will be. As for myself, I cannot wait to see this and I hope, that is what the rest of you feel
. Summer time is over now and its soon time for Halloween again, not only in Haddonsfield, but in the rest of the world. Let`s all hope that John will keep on bringing icons to the silver screen and with that i sign off.....
So this looks pretty good, and I'm glad to see that this creature looked pretty realistic and not totally CGI which I hate (take the hint to the "Fright Night" remake crew) and I'm quite excited to see this because it looks like a good movie
so this "prequel" basically mirrors Carpenter's film....and I'm pretty sure I saw more CGI than I need to....why is hollywood so lazy.....nobody has passion anymore for any of it. The Stan winston days are over. so sad.....
Grab your DVD of The Thing and a box of tissues.
From the trailer I DO get the vibe that it the John Carpenter version just with a Ripley-type character. So again the question is this: Why? There was no need in going to the beginning! If there is nothing NEW that could add to the original there is absolutely no use for a prequel. And if its a prequel why call it THE THING?!? So Hollywood has gotten so damn lazy that they can't EVEN come up with titles any more!!!!
The cinema is truly dead then.
The decision was made to name the film the same title as the first film, because the producers felt adding a "colon title" such as Exorcist II: The Heretic had felt less reverential.
I'm hoping that this prequel will show a more in depth review of the aliens that drove the ship and what they looked like and it would be cool if (maybe this is stupid for thinking this), maybe we'll see the THING in its true form...if it has a visible body that can be seen from the human eye. I just like to wonder about the possibilities of this film in showing us the origins of this THING that has to clone in order to survive/takeover. Is it simply just an alien virus (which is cool and I'm fine with that), or does it actually have its own limbs and eyes and its own language!? IMHO, this flick would be really cool if we're given the chance to see more of the actual THING and that it turns out that it specializes in breaking its body down into a deadly clone-producing virus!!
The trailer looks interesting and I hope it has the tension that the 1981 version had. They (Hollywood) just don't make many monster movies any more, the ones that do make it to the big screen are just snots in a tissue compared to Carpenter's masterpiece. I'll be first in line to see this, hope it doesn't disappoint
HELL YEAH!
Wow so this pretty much IS the John Carpenter version, with different people. I'll see it, but I'm hoping there is a little more to it than the trailer suggests. The paranoia and the tension are all well and good, but I'd like to see a little something different.
Where the F**K are Trailer?!
I am a big fan of the Carpenter remake and i hope they don't botch it.
Limited CGI and a confirmed R rating! Oh, happy fucking day! Not that I wasn't going to see it in theaters, but I'll be going with much less dread.
but still dread
Prequel? Why movie called "The Thing"?
But Better "The Thing: Begins" or "The Thing: Origins".
Although I'm going to see it, I think I still may like the original better.
Mary is soooooooo sexy.. jjust saying, but a hot girl can't save a movie. If they use CGI for the 'thing' then this movie almost deserves to fail. I don't mind if they use CGI for anything other then the 'thing'. Also it's nice to see people not crying/complaining and whining at the fact that there is females in this, unlike the boards at imdb
Yes, she is hot.

yeah not much griping here... though personally I usually don't really prefer female leads especially in horror movies, there is some good movies with female leads like The Descent, Night of the living dead remake (love the first one but she was a whiny bitch) high tension, and frontiers. There's definitely a few more badass ladies. Maybe everyone can suggest some of their favorites.
While I do have my reservations about this remake, the Director has stated that he respects the JC's Thing and he uses it as the foundation for his vision, and I guess we'll just have to hang our hat on that. It's just that sooo many remake turds have been pumped out recently that I can't determine weather it will be good or suck eggs. I guess that we can at least be happy that Michael Bay is not attached.
In reading, you would see that this ISN'T a remake, it's a PREQUEL.
I had this realy good idea of how this prequel could end, didnt know if i should post it incase its true but here it is....
AFTER THE EVENTS FOLD OUT THE THING IS DESTROYED IN ITS SHIP(AS WE HAVE A PIC OF THIS FILM AND THE 2 CHARACTERS IN THE SHIP)EVERY ONE DIES APART FROM 2 MALES AND THE FEMALE,ONE MALE SAYS TO THE FEMALE WE ARE GOING AFTER THE DOG WE WILL COME BACK WE PROMISE,SO THEY GO AFTER THE DOG AND WE KNOW WHAT HAPPENS TO THEM THEY DIE IN JC'S MOVIE,HOURS PASS AND SHE IS STILL WAITING IN A HELICOPTER A FEW MILES AWAY FROM THE CAMP ABOUT TO DIE FROM FREEZING,WHEN SOME ONE KNOCKS ON THE WINDOW OF THE CHOPPER,SHE OPENS THE DOOR AND TO THE AUDIENCES SURPRISE ITS MACREADY PLAYED BY kurt russell,HE SAYS'LETS GET THIS THING STARTED,SAVE YOUR STORY TILL WE GET OUTA HERE..SHE LOOKS SHOCKED AS HE FLYS THE CHOPPER INTO THE AIR,WE SEE THE BASE FROM THE ORIGINAL FILM ON FIRE AND THE CREDITS ROLL....
THIS WOULD BE THE PERFECT ENDING FOR ME BECAUSE IT TIES UP BOTH FILMS,SHOWS MACREADY ALIVE AND THE PREQUEL ENDING AND ENDS THE STORY.
I LIKE "JOHN CARPENTER' 1982 THE THING" I DIDN'T EVEN KNEW ABOUT THE REMAKE UNTIL I WENT TO "UNIVERSAL STUDIOS HOLLYWOOD' HALLOWEEN HORROR NIGHTS 2010" LAST YEAR! THEY SHOW AT PREVIEW RIGHT THERE, AND I WAS LIKE HOLY SHIT! EY THAT SHIT LOOK TIGHT! I CAN'T WAIT FOR IT! AMA GO SEE IT FOR SURE!
It's a PREQUEL, not a remake.
I am praying they don't use cgi, please please please hollywood do not destroy another childhood memory.
Completely agree. That is what i loved most about Carpenters version, very realistic effects. I've already been let down by George Romero's Survival OTD and its shitty CGI, especially the scene with the flare gun shooting the zombies head(if anybody has seen the movie).
If the fx and style remotely look the same as the origenal i'm in
until i see a picture of a friggin puppet/animatronic, i smell cgi.
and since it started as a syfy project, and there is no rob bottin around, i fear fx are going to suck ass.
lets hope i'm wrong
WTF? gimme back my sausage fest!
I'm looking forward to seeing this movie since i'm a huge fan of the first film. but i've often thought about how great it would be to continue where the first film left off. in my head childs has been replicated and Mcready has to survive back at the norwegian camp, and defend himself until help comes. which it dose but that just leads to more replication and paranoia. (and alot more gore) but i'm sure it would be better in my head that it would be on the silverscreen.
the game for the PS2 was a sequel, but I never got to finish it so I don't know how it ended. I'm sure your idea can be implemented somehow if they did another sequel and also have it that the organism reached a considerable size town and have a stand off against a horde of different mutated creatures FTW.
well i am interested in what they will do with this film, that is right about the women, if i remember right, there weren't any women in the Norwegian camp mentioned. So that's a screw up right there, I'm hoping that it will try to bring the creature to life like in john's version but i know for a fact that it will be a cgi orgy fest, that's number 2 on the disappointment factor, and number three is if they make this a pg 13, then it will completely ruin the whole aspect of the movie, which is a creature horror movie and that means gore and some badass killing and vulgar language. I'm hoping that maybe one day horror movies will bounce back from this shit era of remakes, squeals and non creative thinking. what ever happen to the balls out creative horror movies
John Carpenter, i feel for you, not only for the horrible re-make of Halloween. BUT for the re-make of The Thing.
CHECK OUT THE COMMENTARY OF JOHN CARPENTER ON The Thing DVD.
He explains why a woman's role in the movie was not necessary, another thing that pissed me off. You know your movie is going to tank and that you have no creative juices, when you feel you need to incorporate a woman into a movie that never had a womans role.
Why do these so called directors and producers keep fucking up well done, tasteful horror movies?
When will less than skilled directors and producers learn to make there OWN movies, and not take on the enormous task of re-making cult classics?
FUCK STRIKE ENTERTAINMENT, you ruined Dawn of the Dead. You are in no way capable of creating or re-creating HORROR MOVIES. And i certainly don't see BRING IT ON AGAIN, as a horror movie lmao.
>)
hey the dawn re make was a hell of a lot better then the day of the dead re make
You're being to harsh on the Dawn of the dead remake. I love the original and the new and i see them as two totally different movies. What you should be mad at is that stupid ass Day of the Dead 2 movie that nothing to do with anything. Now thats a piece of donkey doodle.
On the contrary Zack Snyder's Dawn Of The Dead is one of the best remakes in recent memory, and critics around the country and around the world can back that up.
Lilly_Fetish, next time do your research before you rip on a movie. I'm a fan of Carpenter's work and love both Halloween and The Thing. If you bothered to get info on this instead of assuming it's a remake. You would know it's a prequel to Carpenter's The Thing, and they fully intend on remaining faithful. To Carpenter's movie and while i'm on the subject John Carpenter wasn't saying in his commentary.
That the film didn't need a female role so stop trying to twist his words around. In his own words he originally intended for a female character to be in the film. But the woman set for the role ended up getting pregnant. So she had to back out of the role we have no idea. If having a female character would help or hurt the film.Nobody is forcing you to watch remakes of classic films. If you're against them simply don't watch them.
Strike Entertainment....
this may be a good start to avoid a pg-13 rating..
A prequel to the original masterpiece...interesting. I enjoy the fact that we will get to see the events that took place at the Norwegian research camp. But are prequels successful movies? There's Texas Chainsaw Massacre:The Beginning for starters; we already knew what was to come, since there was already a TCM 1. SO what does the main actress in The Thing live? If so, then why doesn't research team from the original movie know about what took place prior? Perhaps a Norwegian cover up? Whatever direction the movie takes, it will cetainly be interesting and maybe even awesome. I for one will be seeing it, and that is only because I enjoy the original and would like to know what happens at the Norwegian camp. Regardless of how this movie goes, I am just glad to see them bringing back great movies to the screen (I can only hope anyway).
One of the greatest films that John's greatest films. For a prequel, I like the fact that we get to see this THING come to life and starts this epidemic. Now with this movie going onto effect, I think the second film should be right after it. Like to see what they came up with in this film.
We all know what happens to the base....destroyed, everyone dies (that we see)...so I hope they make it interesting and put a cool twist on it. CGI will work if they combine it with real FX. The only time 100% true CGI works is if you have a budget like Spielberg or James Cameron get....I doubt these guys got that.
Well they've fucked up all ready. There is not one woman's role in John Carpenter's re-make. In this one there is? Its not The Thing. and its not the re-make.
YES! YES! THE MOST IMPORTANT MOVIE EVER GETS A...PREQUEL??? C'MON I WANT TO SEE KURT RUSSELL AND KEITH DAVID BACK IN ACTION!!!
What? No Wilford Brimley?
