CURRENT STATUS

3/04/07
A couple years have passed and still nothing, so it's probably in some sort of development hell.

LATEST NEWS

2/10/05
One of the producers for the film has an online journal where he occasionally posts about his projects, one of which just happened to be the status of the Fatal Frame film. In it he reveals that a script is done and a director is in talks already. Plans are to have it go behind cameras later this year. He also reveals that fans can expect most of the film to take place in Japan.

10/01/03
Writer/producer John Rogers has signed on as producer. Dreamworks recently confirmed that the film is on the fast-track and the script is being finalized, with a director being named shortly, and casting beginning soon after. Rogers is reportedly thrilled to be on board with the project. It's said he was attracted to the production after hearing that the film would stay true to its original theme by keeping the storyline set in Japan.

He was quoted saying... "I was attracted to the idea of doing a classic, old school haunted house picture, by focusing, too, on cool Japanese cultural additions and different ghost 'mythos' most North American audiences are unfamiliar with, we can do something unique. None of the rules about the supernatural, the characters, or our audience apply in the Fatal Frame world."

N/A Date
Dreamworks President of Production, Mike DeLuca, was quoted saying this about the project...

"Our plan is to take the scariest video game of all time and transport that vision - complete with all the tension, fear, and storyline intact - to the big screen for everyone to experience. This is an exciting, new project with outstanding potential for DreamWorks."

This is the official plot for the game..

Guided by her sixth sense and armed only with an antique camera, Miku sets to solve the mystery of her brother's sudden disappearance. He was a journalist on a quest to gather research about the mansion's haunted hisory. As the story unfolds, Muku discovers gruesome details about the Himura mansion's troubled past. The property and surrounding area have a dark history involving grisly murders, an evil cult, and restless spirits.

I think since this is a japanese story, I would think that Takashi Shimizu would be BEST to direct this film. Keep it all with the japanese style.

AS much as i would LOVE to see Fatal Frame in the big ones, it would mostly depend on if they stick to the game plot and not tweek it into something that changes the whole koolness of the game, you know? NO AMERICANS!!!! All characters MUST, they MUST be ASIAN!!! or they can be asian american, but come on, who hates seeing a white bloned american woman running around screaming half the time of the movie? thats supposed to be asian and more or less brave!!! come on! everyone who has played the game has seen that most of the girls like MIKU are strong and brave and will take death on in the face! But i think it might be difficult to play out with the miasmal, don't you? but than again im so excited if it turns in to a movie!!! >_<

OMG! If they really do make a movie, I will see it as many times as I've played the game. MILLIONS OF TIMES!!!
Wow my heart races and I break out into an excited sweat just thinking of the movie. Dear god!!!
OOoh how I hope this isn't just false leads.
Please, please, please let the damn movie come out soon!

I read something on wiki, stating that the person playing a character in the movie is having no interest in it anymore (I say drop her & find someone that wants to do this, like LITERALLY!). The production started 2 yrs ago, so my guess is its still in the making with no director (& I say to this, get the creators of the game to do it cuz its their horror genre, & they understand the take of it. Like how they got the original creator of the Grudge to do the american take of it.)

This has the potential to be one the most original horror films of all time. The game manages to create a tense atmosphere that is genuinley creepy and frightening whilst steering away from jumpy american horror games/films (Black Christmas) - Cheap thrills. Asian cinema has a great way of creeping us out permanently (Good example being 'The Audition'). I mean its no wonder all the best survival horrors have been Japanese (Konami/Tecmo/Capcom). On the other side I think this movie could have the power to make you feel a wide range of emotions (Fatal Frame 3 had a pretty powerful ending), I think this has the makings of a cinematic great leaving the audience chilled, intruiged, in tears and overall wanting more! Here's waiting!!!
