The Devil's Backbone (2001)

REVIEWER RATING:
8/10

I heard a lot of positive stuff about this Spanish movie and I've been greatly anticipating it since I first saw the trailer last year. I'm glad I finally got to check it and way before its video release here in the US. Although I expected a little more than the movie offered, it still had a very good story and some creepy moments. It takes place in 1939, where a boy who moves into an orphanage, because his father's part of a civil war that is going on in Spain. Being the new kid, he deals with the occasional bullying and frequent encounters with a ghost of a little boy named Santi. As the story goes on we learn more about Santi and what his true intentions are to be haunting the orphanage.

I really enjoyed this movie. It's a bit slow, but it's interesting from the start. It has a great story and its original compared too many other films that deal with ghosts. There are some sweet special effects and some creepy scenes involving Santi. It wasn't as scary as I had hoped, which disappointed me a little. It was said a long time ago that the ending was supposed to be something really controversial, but it was nothing out of the ordinary. It was actually a bit predictable, but still very cool. The story for this movie just basically explains the meaning of ghosts. The acting was good and the directing was excellent.

I would have given the movie a higher-rating, but I felt that I was a little let down with all the hype it got before hand. I expected more scares and a more controversial ending. I should know better. None-the-less it was still a good movie with a great story. I believe this movie will be released in the US in September of this year, so be sure to rent this mofo when it hits video shelves.

A good original story. Expected more scares and a better ending, but still enjoyable and interesting. Check this.
