R-Point

The UK did it twice with Death Watch and The Bunker, and now South Korea take a stab at the war/supernatural sub-genre with R-Point. Unlike the other two films, this movie actually delivers the horror. Tell Me Something director Su-chang Kong returns, moving from a thrilling serial-killer flick to a supernatural ghost-war movie, and successfully-so. Taking place during the Vietnam War, the film follows a shell-shocked officer as he leads his group of men through enemy territory on a mission to find a lost platoon. The men venture to the "R-Point", which is the location of an abandoned mansion that was the last place the men were supposedly last at before their disappearance. With hope of finding clues to the missing men, the group of soldiers’ crosses into supernatural realms when a certain few begin seeing ghosts of dead men, causing paranoia and fear in the squad.

This movie proves that a campfire ghost story can still scare the modern-day audience. Leaving long-haired ghosts and over-used CGI behind, R-Point delivers the goods with mood and performance alone. With the use of a secluded mansion and a War-backdrop as a canvas for the eerie atmosphere, the film manages to give the viewer chills as more of the story is revealed. Unlike other films in the sub-genre, this focuses more on creepy atmosphere and doesn't play with the paranoia theme as much as others may have. The movie stays at a constant slow, but moody, pace as it revolves solely around the group of men and their encounter with the supernatural. U.S. viewers can check this flick out when it hits DVD shelves next week.

OVERALL

A creepy old-school ghost story that delivers the chills thanks to its successful use of the secluded atmosphere around them. Worth a check.
