This was a horror movie? That's a question that's asked many times by those who've seen this film. It doesn't seem like a horror movie at all until towards the end, and even then it's a bit confusing... So basically the story leads you to believe that it's going to be a haunted apartment building since the new guy moves in and discovers some mysterious dark secrets that happened in the past and present. Not really the case here. When you watch the movie you’re basically following a lonely man who befriends a woman and learns about the bad happenings that are currently going on in the apt. Where are the ghosts? Not here! There's nothing really "horror" about this; at least not until towards the end when the audience has pretty much given up or at least I felt like giving up. Although it is interesting how a murder from many years ago affects each person in the building in one form or another.
Despite the fact that the actual genre for the film is questionable, it's still a good movie on its own because of its story. It is a very slow-paced movie, but if you pay close attention to everything, you'll realize that it's actually a nice drama. There are times when the horror aspect rears its ugly head during certain scenes, which is actually somewhat thrilling, like when the characters hears a strange sound and checks it out (naturally) to discover nothing's there. I decided to give it a 6-rating, because it was actually a nice drama, but fails as a horror movie. This is a unique film in the aspect that it tackles the "horrors" of everyday life in the eyes of the poor that live in the apartment and the fact that just the apartment building itself is creepy on its own without any real supernatural aspect. The twist at the end was pretty interesting, but also somewhat confusing. In the end it was a nice flick that actually makes you think, but depending on who's watching, can also bore the audience.
OVERALL
A decent
drama, but a lame "horror" flick. It's more of a thriller if
anything that tackles the everyday lives of the poor people who live in
a creepy apartment building. Don't bother unless you're really into flicks
that have a lot of story, but be prepared of it's incredibly slow pacing.
