I remember wanting to see this film back when it was at the theatres, but since dumbass Dimension films decided to give it a limited release (168 screens) I wasn't able to see it. I'm glad I got my hands on an advanced demo copy, because it was as good as I thought it'd be. The story basically takes your typical haunted-ship deal, but gives it a twist by having it on a WW2 submarine. It's about a crew on the submarine, who discover a few friendly survivors in the waters. They've apparently gotten stranded when their ship went down. After they are rescued a series of strange events happen all around the boat.
The first half of the movie is very much like U5-71 - it really doesn't feel like it's any kind of horror film at all until the strange stuff starts to happen about 30/40 minutes into it. What I liked most about this was the dark atmosphere. I thought it kept a good eerie mood going on throughout the whole film. It's no surprise that it was going to be dark considering it was directed by Pitch Black director, David Twohy. The movie does succeed in building good tension, but I didn't find myself scared at any point, which I was a little disappointed about. The cast is excellent and so is the acting. I thought the ending was a little predictable, but I enjoyed it none-the-less. I would have given the movie a higher-rating, but I was slightly disappointed by the lack of scares, but other than that it was a good movie with a nice ghost story. I believe this movie will be hitting DVD on March 11th, so be sure to check this mofo out.
