The Brood

I'm not much of a Cronenberg fan, but this movie always interested me and it wasn't until recently that I finally got around to checking it. Having viewed it I have to say that it wasn't as good as I thought it'd be. The story is about a psychiatrist that uses unusual treatments on his patients. His main patient is a man's wife whom he seems to obsess over. After many attempts to contact his wife and fail, the man begins to suspect the psychiatrist has more than just a doctor/patient relationship. He later learns that the psychiatrist also may have a connection with recent killings by supposedly deformed children.

I thought this movie was pretty decent. It's interesting, but really slows down at times. It gets weird towards the end, but that's much like a lot of David Cronenberg's movies. The deformed children were a little freaky, but in the end I didn't find the movie scary at all. I thought the performance by the psychiatrist played by Oliver Reed was well done and all the blood and gore was a plus. I wanted to like the movie more than I did, but I just couldn't get into it. It has its moments, but not enough for me.

OVERALL

Worth a check if you're a Cronenberg fan, but avoid otherwise.

Easily one of Cronenburg's weakest movies. "Scanners", "The Fly", "A History of Violence", they were all better than this. It too give it a 5, because there's some good violence and a few creepy/disturbing scenes, but it was alo really boring alot, and many scenes didn't make much sense.
