| Dead and Breakfast I used to be really pumped to see this film, which was reported to be a really gory and fun flick with zombies in it. I finally got to check the film and in the end I came out slightly disappointed. Story-wise it sucks badly, but gore-wise it's very cheesy and fun. It seems like director Matthew Leutwyler tried to go back to the Evil Dead and Dead Alive roots -- mixing zombies, lotsa gore, and humor. Sadly he succeeds in making it a fun gore-flick, but falls flat when it came to a decent story or remotely funny humor. Honestly I found most of the humor rather dry, but maybe that's just me. I also couldn't get into the singing narrator (yes, a narrator that sings). You may remember something similar to that in the Ben Stiller and Cameron Diaz comedy There's Something About Mary. We're even given a short sequence that involves all the zombies dancing in sync, to what seems to be homage to Michael Jackson's Thriller. Now if we look past the repetitive singing narrator and attempted humor, we'll be treated to a nice gory zombie flick. These "zombies" aren't your typical zombies either -- no, they are able to move quite fast and even use weapons. So what the hell is the plot you ask? Well it's basically about a group of friends that make their way via a camper to a friend's wedding. Of course they get lost along the way and end up in a small hick town, where they are forced to stay overnight after the sheriff discovered one of the friends' brief encounters with a drifter, whom they locked up. The sheriff -- thinking the group can be useful against the mysterious drifter -- makes'em spend the night a local Bed and Breakfast. Later that night they hit up a bar, leaving the nerdy one of the group behind, where he discovers the drifter's "box" which, once opened, turns the person into an evil zombie, who can turn the dead into zombies after placing something from their body within the box. Thus we have a small army of the undead, made up of locals. There are many references to other films in this movie, like Evil Dead for one. I'll give the director an A for effort, but a D in execution. It was an interesting attempt to bring back the old gory-zombie-humor that many of us grew up with, but with the horribly unoriginal story, and all the lame country-singing from the narrator you may find yourself wanting the film to just end already. Despite all that, if you're looking for a gory horror "comedy" with a solid cast, then you may enjoy it more than I did. I believe Anchor Bay just got the rights to the film, and plan to give it some sort of theatrical release early next year. OVERALL Comments page 1 of 1:
I was bored one day and rented this movie. Not a bad movie very low budget, but it did have a pretty good cast. Some of the acting was over the top, but all together it wasn't that bad of a flick. I doubt I will ever watch it again. If I had to rate it it would at least get a 6 the gore was good and I like that in any horror movie.
I thought this sucked. It had lousy characters, poor humor, forgettable gore, and a scene or two that didn't make too much sense. 5/10.
