Evil Laugh

I remember passing up the cover for this flick many years ago in my old Blockbuster (when it carried old 80's horror), but I never wanted to check it out. I guess the title and cover must've thrown me off. Either way, I never expected to see the film until recently when I got a chance to finally view it. Well I did and the title's right, it is a laugh, but far from an evil one.

The story is once again about a group of young and horny friends, who meet up an old home that a friend of theirs purchased for a cheap price. Hmmm.. I wonder why it was cheap? Perhaps someone was murdered there many years back? Well anyway, the friends get to the house and make themselves at home, but it doesn't take long before they start "disappearing". Original story huh? You can thank Steven Baio for that, and yes he's related to Scott Baio; they're brothers, and I can see why Steven was never in the spotlight as much as his bro. Steven wrote and starred, and hell, even produced the film. Why Steven, why!?

What ties the title and the movie together, is the fact that the killer has this supposedly "evil laugh", which really sounds more like a forced chuckle to me. At least it's not as bad as the Donald Duck impression the killer had in Lucio Fulci's New York Ripper. The movie reuses the same basic kills we've seen countless times in other 80's slashers, with the exception of one scene that involves a microwave. The bad thing about that kill is the fact that a microwave can't be used with the door open, and it was in fact open. Then again, if I were to take that part seriously I'd have to take the rest of the silly story seriously. This is a huge clichéd mess, but the bottom line is I've seen worse. In a long line of 80's slashers this movie managed to stay in the middle of the best-of-the-best to the worst-of-the-worst.

OVERALL

Another clichéd 80's slasher that fails to deliver anything good or remotely original. Decent at best, but don't bother unless you're big on the 80's.
