UHM - Review - FearDotCom

I knew when I first heard about this film that it wouldn't be any good, because of the lack of originality with the plot. A lot of people say it's like a rip-off of Ring because they die after viewing a web site, where in Ring they die after viewing a videotape, but it's more like the other lesser-known Japanese film, Kairo, which is being remade by Wes Craven. In that film people disappear after viewing a web site and it's apparently caused by ghosts that appear to the people after visiting the site.

I saw the movie with a somewhat open-mind, hoping that all the negative reviews were wrong and that the movie wouldn't be too bad, but that didn't work. I was actually bored by many scenes of the film and I kept comparing it to Kairo. The ending was very weak and I found that it had no scares what-so-ever. I was very disappointed with this. The plot is basically about this detective and a health examiner teaming up to find out what is causing all these people to die the way they do and what keys them all together. They find out that it has to do with a web site and they dig deeper to find the meaning of the site and the little albino girl that appears many times. The movie's atmosphere was nice and dark and the acting wasn't bad. It was cool two veteran horror actors in the film, being Jeffrey Combs and Udo Kier, and Stephen Dorff had his share of roles like the classic 80's film, The Gate and the more recent Blade. Not much for gore, but it had some decent blood now and then.

I was hoping for better since it was directed by William Malone, who brought us House on Haunted Hill, which I fairly enjoyed. I decided a 5-rating was most fitting since the movie was decent in parts and I've seen a lot worse films.

OVERALL

Very disappointed in this film. No scares, but good dark atmosphere. A decent rent if you're bored, but don't expect much.

not good at all. it was just plain boring. the acting was iffy, the plot definatley wasn't original and it was pretty far fetched even for a ghost movie.
